Smoke billowed through our suburban neighborhoods making visibility less than 30 feet. Most people in the nicer neighborhoods that were close the fire hastily fled their homes, not form fear of flames, but because no one could breath. Despite what the TV reporters say, there are no homes in danger. Where the fire comes out of the hills near the road, it has all been cleared and graded in preparation for new home construction. However, much of Irvine is engulfed in thick smoke, affecting over 200,000 people. It's so difficult to breath in the northern neighborhoods, many people had to stay away form their homes overnight.

‘Go! In California, earthquakes and wildfires. In the mid-west, tornadoes. South, hurricanes. I live a few miles from the Pentagon - after 9/11 we were having terror attack drills and learning how to survive locked in a room with no air going in or out for half a week. There's no such thing as a risk-free area... you got a hurricane, California's getting fires.
My best friend lives in California but thankfully she's to the north. Another friend is in Bakersfield but her area's safe. My prayers are with all of you in the path of these fires. Praying for safety and protected homes and lives for all those near the fires... and safety and patience for those fighting them.

‘Go! Go! Go! If Mother Nature makes a poor god then use the brains God gave you to design cities and urban forestation programs and tree management in such a way that extensive wildfire disasters cannot happen again. You have had a hundred years. Maybe it is time to think ahead or move to an area that is not a tinderbox waiting to burn every few years. If enough people leave property values will fall to a level that will encourage action... those cities should be uninsurable by law. They are merely wealthy Katrinaites with the same mentality but their solution is cheaper than building dikes and pumps... merely building and designing firebrakes and eliminating fuel where possible. That said, my heart does go out to all in their loss and sorrow... but I do believe it is time to fix the root problem and not just leave it to firefighters and insurance companies.

‘Go! The initial place to go for links to these Web sites is the National Interagency Fire Center National Fire News Web site: http://www.nifc.gov/fire_info/nfn.htm This site will have links to fire information posted by the federal wildland fire incident management teams.

Although state and local governments and structural fire fighting agencies will be involved in all of these fires, and sheriff's departments are responsible for evacuations, this is a good place to start. There are currently 11 fires listed in California on the NIFC site. Only two have Web links at this time, several have phone numbers listed for information, but remember these people are VERY busy and these situations change VERY fast, so please don't flood them with calls.

Many firefighting agencies now use a common Web site and stardardized format for incident information: http://www.inciweb.org/ Some of the CA fires have information posted here--although I'm having trouble getting some of the sites to come up, probably because they're so busy. The Ranch Fire site is http://www.inciweb.org/incident/1002/ Links to other official sources of information and agencies working on the fire are located here.

I hope this is helpful to people both in the areas where these fires are occurring and to concerned families and friends across the nation. Keep all of the firefighters in your hearts and prayers--this has been a very long season, and their work is exhausting and stressful. I'm sure they're all very tired.

To those who live in areas that are repeatedly threatened by wildland fires, PLEASE be responsible: Create defensible space on your property, and when you're asked to evacuate DO SO PROMPTLY. If you stay, you add to the complexity of fighting the fires and you endanger the lives of emergency workers!

‘Go! Go! Go! All neighborhoods in distinct danger are receiving reverse 911 calls, so chances are quite good all your loved ones are safe, though the properties may not be. Travel for evacuees is slower than normal, but seems orderly. Cell phone access will be better this PM, but try not to clog it if necessary. This series of fires does look to be worse than the Cedar Fire of '03. More Santa Ana winds (winds out of the dessert areas, blows East to West) on the morrow, coastal highs in the 90's, so could be worse before relief. We're in this one alone 'til Mother Nature relents, so remember, we are all we've got. Conserve resources, some ATM's out of cash, pump as little gas as is needed, stay in, watch TV for updates. If the authorities say go, then do that.

‘Go! Go! Go! When the Santa Anna's blow, no fire break in the world can stop a blaze. These fires are easily crossing 10 lane freeways and are consuming residential areas where very little vegetation exists. And because of the high winds, they can't use the fixed wing aircraft to help control and extinquish the fires, so they are unable to fight them effectively. Just as other areas might have a "freak" hurricane, we get our "freak" disasters too, despite the best planning or preparation.

‘Go! Sept 1970 (Laguna Burn)was wild as ashes like snowflakes were falling everywhere; the worst was late October 2003 as several hundred thousand acres burned. There were police/fire radio communication problems besides a lack of fire helicopters. The resort town of Julian escaped damage but Scripps Ranch, an upscale suburb suffered many home losses. All because a hunter set a fire because he was alone and lost!! And now this firestorm, which may be the worst of all. I think this will convince me to move north to Bishop on US395, a town of less than 5,000 east of the Sierra Range, where the biggest concern is water and the heavy truck traffic north and south (but less busy than the very heavy traffic through downtown Laguna Beach).

‘Go! A home is a home regardless of how much it cost, to read through these posts I get the idea that, this is people helping people, the way it should be. Thank God we live in a country that has a multitude of decent people. To watch your home or business go up in flames is a devastating thing, but with the American spirit, they can be rebuilt. Bless all those firefighters that are doing the best they can under very bad conditions. Remember this, If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.

‘Go! Smoke is bad (read their statement on their website-just google the Wild Animal Park. The ZOO is downtown and is fine.

The Witch fire evacuations: seems to be from the coastal towns Oceanside down to Del Mar and then a path all the way up the mountains to Ramona.

Ramona downtown Street: The main street is intact. All people and animals (as many as possible) have been evacuated.

Needs to local shelters and the stadium (this is for local residents only): food that doesn't need refrigeration, wa†er, sleeping bags and pillows. The Red Cross is coordinating many of the evacuation sites.

Re: Lakeside, El Cajon, Descanso, Harbison Canyon, Crest, Pine Valley, Alpine per request...I believe all have been evacuated..at least East El Cajon and the rest...please correct me if wrong...go to the Sign on San Diego site for more news and for those out of town, our television stations are KNSD, KGTV, KFMB AND KUSI....their websites should have more information.

Please San Diegans, add to this list if you can..and correct any information I posted, if I am incorrect...

Hope some of this helps to answer questions.

‘Go!
