The fact that it was privatley funded I find to be highly indicative of the Bush government's appalling lack of care and concern for our military personnel. Why are there not facilities such as this at every major military hospital? The average age of those wounded in Iraq is under 25, they need ongoing medical care, and in many cases with their old life shattered, they will need job and skills training. In addition, an estimated 30% of those deployed to Iraq will suffer from mental and emotional health issues. Where will they go for help? And what about their families whose lives have also been torn apart? Bush talks a great deal about the debt of grattitude the nation owes these young men and women who have served their country but talk is cheap and does nothing to ease the pain from the physical and emotional injuries they have sustained nor will it help feed their families, assist them in finding employment, or help them build a new future. Perhaps some of the $10 billion dollars government auditors indicate has been wasted or missused by goverment contractors including VP Cheny's Halliburton, should have been used to help these soldiers and Marines regain their lives.

The proud mother of a Marine

Soldiers smiling through the pain

To all of those at Intrepid, know that all of us Americans out here have not forgotten you. How sad is that? When our elected officials have their own medical plan that's far and above what Medicare is for the common folk; when they appropriate funds for "bridges that go nowhere" (in Alaska) and other pork barrel legislation; when they award "no bid" contracts for war-related projects; when millions/ billions of dollars turn up missing; when they sent the troops off to fight with equipment that sorely needed upgrading in order to to help saves lives & prevent injuries, and now we have to use "private donations" to ensure our wounded troops get the best care possible???
But why am I surprised? I've dealt with the VA for 37 years now (lost a leg in 'Nam in '70). The folks who work in the system for the most part are fine, caring folks who do the best with what they've got. Time and again, however, Congress has failed to provide the funds needed so veterans can have their medical needs taken care of in a timely manner. I waited close to three years to get a primary care physician.
If the government is willing to send the troops they should be more than willing- at whatever cost- to take care of them if they come back injured physically or mentally after being in harm's way.

Soldiers smiling through the pain

An idea to create ongoing funding for long-term care of our wounded and in support of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice: Place Congress on the Social Security system like other citizens and re-allocate the costs associated with the free retirement benefit plan they currently enjoy. I respect them and am proud of them. They lay their lives on harms way, because of their sacrifice we can live in peace and comfort. When I heard many many Vets live in poverty and become homeless from post war trauma, I became angry and shame. I think goverment must prepare for these heroes [ all militaries are my hero because their sacrifice I could enjoy the priviliegein U.S] before sending out to civilian life by counselling and job training and finding the job and the shelter. I believe goverment must be sure that they have job and and shelter. I don't mind pay extra TAX FOR THIS CAUSE. I have been praying for these men and women in uniform and wish to help if there's anything I can do. They deserve tangible and untangible support.

Soldiers smiling through the pain

My heart bleed to see men and women suffering in these rehabe centers. My boat was sunk, and my mates and Chief were killed, and I am is still 100% disabled, thought I can now walk with two canes instead of all the time in a wheelchair or scooter. But I still believe in the war against International Communism we were fighting against then.

Today, I can only say to you proud men and women; keep America winning the war on terrorism!!! If folks forget that Iraq was building a super gun to lob shells into Israel (HE, Chemical, and Saddam hoped Biological, and hopefully nuclear), or forget the number of missles that Saddam launched into Israel during the first Gulf War. I think we need to remind them. Now Iran seems to be almost on a suicidal run to collide with the western nuclear superpowers. I hope, and pray, that this does not come to pass.

To the troops,

You've spent long tours, and I know that your sacrifice went to the highest of causes, that is replenishing the tree of Liberty. It's damn hard, I know it first person, and you are doing it in the land of not just IEDs but eveydodies old land mines. Both sides in the Iran/Iraq war dropped them from cargo planes. That is very bad karma. Just pray the rosary, each watch and keep God as you understand Him in mind each step you take, and call up the engineers no matter how tired he bastards are. It's your foot or leg on the line. Let the engineers bitch, that's part of their job. ;-P

    Happy Thanksgiving.

     God Bless you all.

Soldiers smiling through the pain

Unlike the victims of 9-11 that were burned, crushed or leapt to their deaths during the attacks, these brave men and woman volunteered to be the defense against such an abomination occurring on our mainland again. My heart breaks for the injuries and deaths they have suffered. There should be NO limit to the monies appropriated for the care and rehabilitation of these heroes. We could never show our appreciation for their volunteering to defend us against such a sick and depraved ideological enemy. I would love to be out of Afghanistan and Iraq as much as anyone else as to no longer continue sacrificing our personnel in a war that has devolved into a civil conflict. We cannot deny the undisputed fact that we have not been attracted within our borders since we decided to give the enemy "home field advantage." If we get out before these animals are no longer a threat, we will regret it. Terrorists will not kill only the people who supported this war and President Bush. They will kill the war protesters and their loved ones as well right here where we live, work and play. Wars cost exorbanent amounts of money, but in a sorry way, it is an investment in our peace of mind. Bush has to look at the horror of war. He is not blind to this. No one man can be blamed for these problematic times, but each of us true Americans know that freedom is not free. It takes blood, sweat and tears. We have the freedom to be a part of the problem or part of the solution. This article points out one small victory on the home front, but we all must know that the battles of our times will hopefully be fought in the middle east instead of on our streets. We still have a war of helping the soldiers at home and the war in the middle east is not going to solve itself. I am proud of the soldiers that want to continue to contribute to our society and of an administration that would see that our ideals, as a nation, be defended.

Soldiers smiling through the pain

I think we all want to flinch from responsibility when we see suffering like this.

If we disapprove of the Iraq war, we blame President Bush for deciding the soldiers should go and suffer this, and we deflect our awful sense of responsibility with anger at the president. If we approve of the war, we try to frame it as an inevitable requirement of freedom, so really, nobody decided they should go; it just had to be. And we deflect our awful sense of responsibility with anger at those we claim don't "support" the soldiers.

But they went there and suffered this because we ordered them to. We the people, through our elected government. Whether that was a good or bad decision, it was our decision, and we are responsible.

We need argument about the war, because the nation needs to figure out what it really thinks about war. But that argument shouldn't get in the way of our responsibility to those who suffer in obedience to our orders. We all know that, however angry we are politically.

Soldiers smiling through the pain

It's just a shame it took the Presidents's visit to get the media to highlight the facility and the wonderful people there

Soldiers smiling through the pain

In honor of these heroes, here is where you can donate to the the Intrepid Foundation :

Intrepid Foundation (in relation to this article)http://www.fallenheroesfund.org/fallenheroes/about/

Here are some other great organizations that also accept monetary donations, cards/letters, and care package items for our nation's heroes :

Fisher Houses (also link to other places to donate)
http://www.fisherhouse.org/

Packages from Home
http://www.packagesfromhome.org/

God Bless!

Soldiers smiling through the pain

I admire the men and women who (by their own choice) joined the military with the understanding that they may at some point during their career be called upon to go to war. As was pointed out earlier in this blog...The United States is the land of the free only because of the brave. Freedom is never "free"...look at the price everyone at the Center for the Intrepid has paid. Thank you to all the military for allowing me and my family our freedom. Please keep these brave people in your prayers not only during war time but all the time. God Bless You All!

Soldiers smiling through the pain

God bless each one of these brave young men & women & President Bush. Remember 911! It is the Terrorists that attacked this Nation & yes, it was President Bush who sent our Military to the Middle East but what was the alternative?War in our homeland? It angers me that Americans seem to forget that.It furhter angers me to see how our Military has been deminished in size.We are sending the same troops on 2 & 3 tours because we have so few.We need to build our Military through increased incentives to make the Military a desired career choice. We waiste so much money in governement. Why not cut the perks to politicians, i.e. we use our own cars & pay for our own gas to go to work? Why shouldn't they?Don't we pay them enough to buy their own vehicles? Why should Politicians get rich while some of our Military are using Food Stamps just to feed their families? The money saved could be used to increase wages, benefits, & pensions for Military Service.A Nation is only as strong as it's Military. So please, let's show our appreciation, let's get behind our Military & support them & their families. We need them & we need them strong. I pray every American soilder will enjoy peace, blessings,& happiness in all the coming holidays. Thanks to each one of you, those injured & those still in the midst of the battle. Edmund John Jeffer's last few words were some of the most touching, inspiring and most truthful words spoken since the tragedy of 9/11 - and since our ation went to war. SGT. Jeffers was a strong soldier and talented writer. He died in Iraq on September 19, 2007. He was a loving husband, brother and son. His
service was more than this country could ever grasp - but the least you can do for the man who sacrificed his life for you ... is listen to what he had to say.
Listen up and pay attention to all of the Cindy Sheehans and Al Frankens
of the world. To MSNBC, CNN, and CBS. To all who call themselves Americans ... Hope Rides Alone.

Hope Rides Alone by Eddie Jeffers

I stare out into the darkness from my post, and I watch the city burn to the ground. I smell the familiar smells, I walk through the familiar
rubble, and I look at the frightened faces that watch me pass down the streets of their neighborhoods. My nerves hardly rest; my hands are steady on a device that has been given to me from my government for the
purpose of taking the lives of others. I sweat, and I am tired. My back aches from the loads I carry. Young American boys look to me to direct them in a manner that will someday allow them to see their families
again...and yet, I too, am just a boy....my age not but a few years more than that of the ones I lead. I am stressed, I am scared, and I am paranoid...because death is everywhere. It waits for me, it calls to me
from around street corners and windows, and it is always there.
There are the demons that follow me, and tempt me into thoughts and actions that are not my own...but that are necessary for survival. I've made compromises with my humanity. And I am not alone in this. Miles from me are my brethren in this world, who walk in the same streets...who feel the same things, whether they admit to it or not.
And to think, I volunteered for this...
And I am ignorant to the rest of the world...or so I thought.

But even thousands of miles away, in Ramadi , Iraq , the cries and screams and complaints of the ungrateful reach me. In a year, I will be
thrust back into society from a life and mentality that doesn't fit your average man. And then, I will be alone. And then, I will walk down the streets of America , and see the yellow ribbon stickers on the cars of the same people who compare our President to Hitler.

I will watch the television and watch the Cindy Sheehans, and the Al Frankens, and the rest of the ignorant sheep of America spout off their mouths about a subject they know nothing about. It is their right, however, and it is a right that is defended by hundreds of thousands of boys and girls scattered across the world, far from home. I use the word
boys and girls, because that's what they are. In the Army, the average age of the infantryman is nineteen years old. The average rank of soldiers killed in action is Private First Class.

People like Cindy Sheehan are ignorant. Not just to this war, but to the results of their idiotic ramblings, or at least I hope they are. They don't realize its effects on this war. In this war, there are no Geneva Conventions, no cease fires. Medics and Chaplains are not spared from the enemy's brutality because it's against the rules. I can only imagine
the horrors a military Chaplain would experience at the hands of the enemy. The enemy slinks in the shadows and fights a coward's war against us. It is effective though, as many men and women have died since the start of this war. And the memory of their service to America is tainted by the inconsiderate remarks on our nation's news outlets. And every
day, the enemy changes...only now, the enemy is becoming something new.
The enemy is transitioning from the Muslim extremists to Americans. The enemy is becoming the very people whom we defend with our lives. And they do not realize it.
But in denouncing our actions, denouncing our leaders, denouncing the war we live and fight, they are isolating the military from society...and they are becoming our enemy.

Democrats and peace activists like to toss the word "quagmire" around and compare this war to Vietnam . In a way they are right, this war is
becoming like Vietnam . Not the actual war, but in the isolation of country and military. America is not a nation at war; they are a nation with its military at war. Like it or not, we are here, some of us for
our second, or third times; some even for their fourth and so on.
Americans are so concerned now with politics, that it is interfering with our war. Terrorists cut the heads off of American citizens on the Internet...and there is no outrage, but an American soldier kills an Iraqi in the midst of battle, and there are investigations, and sometimes soldiers are even jailed...for doing their job.
It is absolutely sickening to me to think our country has come to this. Why are we so obsessed with the bad news? Why will people stop at nothing to be against this war, no matter how much evidence of the good
we've done is thrown in their face? When is the last time CNN or MSNBC or CBS reported the opening of schools and hospitals in Iraq ? Or the leaders of terror cells being detained or killed? It's all happening, but people will not let up their hatred of Bush. They will ignore the good news, because it just might show people that Bush was right.

America has lost its will to fight. It has lost its will to defend what is right and just in the world. The crazy thing of it all is that the American people have not even been asked to sacrifice a single thing.
It's not like World War Two, where people rationed food, and turned in cars to be made into metal for tanks. The American people have not been asked to sacrifice anything. Unless you are in the military or the family member of a service member, its life as usual...the war doesn't affect you. But it affects us. And when it is over, and the troops come home, and they try to piece together what's left of them after their service...where will the detractors be then? Where will the Cindy Sheehans be to comfort and talk to soldiers and help them sort out the last couple years of their lives, most of which have been spent dodging death and wading through the deaths of their friends? They will be where they always are, somewhere far away, where the horrors of the world
can't touch them. Somewhere where they can complain about things they will never experience in their lifetime; things that the young men and women of America have willingly taken upon their shoulders.

We are the hope of the Iraqi people. They want what everyone else wants in life: safety, security, somewhere to call home. They want a country
that is safe to raise their children in. Not a place where their children will be abducted, raped, and murdered if they do not comply with the terrorists demands. They want to live on, rebuild and prosper.
And America has given them the opportunity, but only if we stay true to the cause, and see it to its end. But the country must unite in this endeavor...we cannot place the burden on our military alone. We must all stand up and fight, whether in uniform or not. And supporting us is more than sticking yellow ribbon stickers on your cars. It's supporting our
President, our troops and our cause.

Right now, the burden is all on the American soldiers. Right now, hope rides alone. But it can change, it must change. Because there is only
failure and darkness ahead for us as a country, as a people, if it doesn't. Let's stop all the political nonsense, let's stop all the bickering, let's stop all the bad news, and let's stand and fight!

Eddie's father, David Jeffers, writes:
I'm not sure how many letters or articles you've ever read from the genre of "News from the Front," but this is one of the best I've ever read, including all of America's wars. As I was reading this, I forgot
that it was my son who had written it. My emotions range from great pride to great sorrow, knowing that my little boy (22 years old) has become this man. He is my hero. Thank all of you for your prayers for
him; he needs them now more than ever. God bless.

Though Eddie is no longer with us, you can help to let his voice be heard. And yet filled with so much irony. It is amazing to me that our government is willing to put the lives of hundreds of thousands of US soldiers on the line, and yet we have to "privately" raise money to care for only hundreds of the tens of thousands that have come back hurt/wounded. I am ashamed. Truly. As the daughter of a career retired army soldier, I stand proud of America, I respect our soldiers, and was taught to honor/respect our Commander in Chief. President Bush has caused me to rethink everything I have ever known about this country, destroyed our reputation with the rest of the world, and is steadily sending our soldiers to die. All in the name of George W. Being human I am tempted to sit back and say I did my time now it’s someone else’s turn.
But I remember all to well what it is like to answer the call to duty. I remember the pain in my heart every time I had to part with loved ones knowing that I was going to miss irretrievable moments in their growing lives. I recall all too vividly the uncertainty and the foreboding that precedes a venture into treacherous parts of the world in search of those who wish to do harm to my loved ones, my countrymen and myself.
I cannot disregard the fact I am proud to be doing it. I feel privileged to be given the honor as well as the responsibility of defending my nation the greatest nation in the history of the world. And one more thing I cannot recall a time that I ever felt my nation was asking too much of me. Until now……
ARE WE ASKING TOO MUCH OF TOO FEW? I cannot help but wonder if we are not asking too much of those who will assume the watch in my stead. I see young sailors and marines going off to Iraq and Afghan for their third tours and wonder who will assume the leadership roles for which they were preparing for. I see and know too many families left behind to endure even more separation and wonder how much we can reasonably expect from these young people how long can we count on them to continue to serve continue to sacrifice.
I am in absolute awe of these patriots who answer the call to duty again and again. I understand why they do it but I do not honestly know how they do it. The problem is not that we are asking for sacrifice. There is nothing new in that. It is that we are asking for so much sacrifice from a select few the few who have volunteered when we ask so little of our citizens.
The problems are that conscription is not a vote getter it does not put money in anyone’s pocket it raises complicated questions. It asks the average American to step outside their comfort zone and do more than they have become complacently used to doing. But there is a calculus here that can no longer be denied we seem to have found most of the viable volunteers we are going to find. Pay raises and even patriotism have been tapped out.
Remember we are not shirkers we are the people who have volunteered while fellow countryman have shopped at the mall, we have served often under arduous circumstances away from loved ones while the rest of the country goes on about daily normal lives. I am committed to serve and if asked at retirement I would gladly serve again. Too few of American citizens are as committed to the cause of continued freedom as our enemies are committed to ending it. So we are forced to turn to the finite number of volunteers and ask them to shoulder more and more of the burden, knowing that reinforcements are not forthcoming. We ask them those who have stepped forward to preserve a world for the rest who hold back.
I for one am embarrassed I am ashamed to look this minority in the eye and ask them to do more while the rest of the nation sits by idly. Yet my turn is quickly coming. Just around the corner there is a final chapter to my biography as a United States Sailor. I intend to continue wearing my patriotism on my sleeve as I have carried a Petty Officer Chevron for nearly 20 years. "Love hath no greater man than this, that he lay down his
life for his friends".
Soldiers smiling through the pain

Our soldiers are heroes, willing to fight and die for an unjust cause.

Our president and his cronies are self serving cowards.

Soldiers smiling through the pain

John from San Antonio is really drinking the Kool Aide "Thanks to our President for taking the time out to meet the men and women working hard to recover." This demented childlike king we foolishly elected has an obligation to meet and care for the men and woman he sent into harms way! It was difficult to keep the tears away while we sang "God Bless America". It is a shame that this President and his administration did not heed the history that we find ourselves repeating when it comes to conflict. It's tragic that their patriotism was exploited and that they were sent to do battle in a manufactured war. This hospital was funded by donations? That is so sad and wonderful at the same time. Thank God there are people who saw the need and were able to donate. The sad part is this.... we as Americans think nothing of spending tons of money on going to a football or basketball game paying the high price of the tickets. When we get there we watch players who are making millions...but yet a young woman or man in our armed services who are in a war or injuried make very little. We should be ashamed as a country that in order to care for them when they are hurt that we couldn't build and fund a wonderful place like this with money that is wasted on so many other things. We all get caught up with what Hollywood and our sports world is doing that we forget about those that are suffering..... how sad.

Soldiers smiling through the pain

Denise from Ca....what that young man wrote was so full of truth and feeling.... is there a way that I could get a copy of that?

Soldiers smiling through the pain

J. These soldiers are over there giving thier lives and worse so that we can sit here, safe, sound, and with only the petty worries of our day. We are not sitting there under fire, surviving each and every day while being assaulted. Then they get wounded and worse and people use this article, designed to bring you awareness so you can send them your prayers and maybe a Christmas card to say thanks but instead you reduce it to political garbage. You all should feel ashamed. There are other forums, other blogs that you can voice this stuff. Go there and whine, but leave this place for thanks and prayers. Some of us appreciate what they have given and will continue to give every day of their lives.

Soldiers smiling through the pain

Semper Fi, all my brothers and Sisters.

Soldiers smiling through the pain

Our hopes for a better future go out to all our vets, those with visible scars, as those whose scars are unseen but deeply felt. I thank god everyday I live in a country that is protected by the best of the best and I am DAMNED proud of each and every man and women that went and will go to Iraq to keep my family and I safe. In 1968 my father was deployed with the 82nd 3rd birg., this birg. was sent to HUE Vietnam by President Johnson he came to Fort Bragg and wished them well on ther mission, then they were deployed by C-141's. Every 45 minutes a C-141 took off from Pope AFB until the whole Birg. was lifted. the first C-141 was in Vietnam within 24 hrs, this was due to the TET. I was 10 years old @ the time and stood by my father the whole time until he had to be with his troops. I can remmember watching Dan Rather and all the other news people that are anohors now nightly. I watch due to my fathers deployment and concerned about his whereabouts. I cried nightly, could not stop worrying and missing him very mush. I can remember having to go to Womack Army hospital due to nerves I was only 10 years old, the Red Cross had to locate my father and back then commution was now as easy. The RC got him on radio to telephone so that I could hear him, man that was one of the happest moments of my life as I remember I got into that condition due to watching the news (HUE was under heavy attack and my dad was there). I can remember me and other Army Brats chasing the Green Army car everytime everytime it came into our neighborhood just to make sure it was not our father who had gotten killed or wounded. Man sometimes it was ten kids chasing that car and I can remember evertime and every house where it stopped. What was sad was when a child was in our group where the car stopped.Things have change for the good since then, internet, cell phones and all the support. We send packages monthly and promote everone to do so we go to prayer groups for the deployed we helped with deployed familyies and give our love to them all. We do this out of love because I have been in their childs shoes. Please do not forget our troops.........

Soldiers smiling through the pain

S. Yes, We all would love for there to be no war, no fear of being attacked by another country, and if you want to continue to be able to lie down each night in peace, then I suggest you show some support and quit complaining about the government. "Are you doing something to keep peace in our Great Nation?" I don't think that bashing the government is a solution.
