No.
I am writing from Vancouver, British Columbia and I stumbled upon a used hypodermic needle near some bushes at a local Chevron station in a very upscale part of town. This is getting more and more common here. Used needles can be found just about anywhere AND there's a gang war going on lately, tied to the heroin trade.
A city councilor here recently demanded that Ports Police be reinstated. His demands so far have been rebuffed by the Minister for Public Safety (Mr. Stockwell Day).
Isn't it a wonder that record amounts of heroin are on
the streets these days when heroin production in Afghanistan is at an all-time high and the government sells our ports infrastructure to Dubai Ports World and the government then refuses to adequately police the ports? Something rotten is going on.
The government wants to go all-out with punishing drug
addicts yet do little or nothing to prevent drugs from
entering through our ports. I believe this is being done on purpose.
Heroin drug targets middle school students

u know, its kind've a given that you don't use stuff taht makes u "happy". im an 8th grader and even i know better than that. i know some stupid kids but if u snort cheese that makes u happy and ur friends say its not a drug. whoa, u need rehab in the first place

Heroin drug targets middle school students

Here in North East Ohio the plague is cheap Afghan heroin also pushed along with prescription pain killers and tranquilizers. What are the penalties if arrested for dealing "cheese"? Has anyone (doctors) spoken of the additional health hazards of ingesting large quantities of Tylenol, liver/kidney damage?
It seems that all these questions go unanswered. Parents whose children abuse drugs like "cheese" are obviously not watching thier kids close enough. If a parent is too dense to recognize new or odd behaviour in thier children, then those parents are really to blame and should be held accountable legally in the event of a childs death or overdose.
If you as a parent suspect abuse, make your child take a drug test. If positive then immediate action should be taken. Isolate the child from suspect friends. Do not let them have freedom to roam about the city. Chauffer them to and from school and work, if they work. Take away thier cell phone. I could go on but hopefully, my point has been made. Is this all too much trouble for a parent? Compare it to the trouble of a dead son or daughter.
I speak from experience, having fooled my parents for years only to have to deal with drug addiction as an adult. Drugs cost me dearly. I wish my parents hadn't been so gullible and in, really, a state of denial anyway. They preferred to believe that it wasn't/couldn't happen, to having to take appropriate action. I overdosed three times as an adolescent and am only here by the grace of God. I should be dead three times over. My parents would have been largely to blame, I was only 15 years old when I first overdosed. I know that individual resposibility in anyone is important, but how individually responsible can a 15 year old be?

Heroin drug targets middle school students

When are we going to realize that the prohibition of drugs just make it easier for these people to target our children.Wake up America! More than 30 years ago, when I was in my teens I got involved in using. it started with LSD and marijuana then progresses to THC and on my 18th birthday to heroin then onto meth. It tool me about 20 years to finally make the choices to stop the madness. I lost 6 years of my life in prison by the time I was 19 for smuggling and kept on using after prison for another 10 years. It was hell on earth and I thank God to this very day that I turned my life over to Jesus. It has been a struggle at times, but with other people around me who are there for me to support my decision, and my growing faith in God, I have been clean for 20 years. I am thankful everyday for what I have and I spend my time to tell others that come across my path that they can also get free and stay free. You can't do it alone, you need others to stand with you, but you must choose to do it for yourself, First. I know what the addiction is and I just got word yesterday a good friend overdoses last week. I am going to his funeral on Monday, he was a good young man and it didn't have to end this way. Don't give up, make that call, this is you we are talking about and you are worth it!

Heroin drug targets middle school students

This reminds of a story I read about a few years ago where teens and preteens in Texas where using heroin, and had no idea because it was referred to as chivas (which is spanish for heroin). I am a recovering heroin addict and I wasn't introduced to heroin until I was 33.I was addicted for 5 years until I developed endocarditis which is an infection of the heart from my IV use of heroin.I spent 6 weeks in a nursing home hooked to an antibiotic IV.I came close to dying from that. While I was there I was put on methadone to keep me from withdrawing, which my heart was too weak to withstand.I had been to detox and rehabs before that and still went back to using.Only when I was put on methadone was I able to stay clean.I have been clean for 3 years now. Many people think that methadone maintenance is just substituting one drug for another, which is not true. With proper doctor supervision and being at the correct dosage, there is no high from the methadone,it takes away the cravings and keeps me from feeling any withdrawal symptoms.I get no "high" from the methadone,it has been the only thing, along with counseling that has kept me from relapsing.I know how hard it is to get off the drugs,it was hard in my mid thirties,I can't imagine how tough it is at 13,14,15...Kids shouldn't have to deal with drug addiction, their teens are supposed to be for school, friends, fun etc. This world keeps getting crazier and it is just so wrong that young teens are going through this.My heart and prayers go out to all those struggling with addiction.Stay strong and talk to someone, get help. It's fun at first but it always leads to sickness, lying, stealing, jail and makes a living nightmare of your life.Get help now before it's too late and you ruin your life along with all your friends' and familys'.They hurt most of all, take it from someone who knows,I regret using everyday,at least I have a second chance now.Don't throw your chances away, you only get so many and it's not all it's cracked up to be.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

This story is alarming and heartbreaking. Ask yourself this, Why did Heroin overflow during the Vietnam war? Why was there a massive increase of Cocaine flow when the CIA And U.S. Government was in South America? Now were in Afghanistan and once again the Heroin is flowing around the world, You know the poppy fields the U.S. said it was going to destroy? Or know when and where they should be intolerant and whom to blame. Yeah America is arrogant. Yeah America is ignorant. But guess what since I live here that lumps me too. Alcohol and Drug use (ie addiction in generic terms) is clearly the number one problem that this company faces on a Socio-Economic scale. 99% of all criminal cases in our over-burdened judicial system are drug/alcohol related at least indirectly if not directly. We can never win against addiction because our society believes this disease to be a moral issue. The dealers that sell the dope are themselves addicts who were children that became addicted. This story is just the beginning of a cycle, not the end of one. Ten years from now you'd read the same story of the same individual and think how useless she is and she should be locked away from society. Well guess what, JAILS DON'T WORK! AIDS, Cancer, MD, all these diseases are targetted with big bucks for research and efforts are made to cure the afflicted. We toss someone into a treatment center and when they get out we stamp them with - All better now! Real recovery does exist and it is through quiet little 12 step programs that people find recovery and learn a New Way To Live. There is not an addict living today who is innocent of the proliferation of drugs, whether a 12 year old girl or a 55 year old man. Destruction occurs at a personal scale and affects anyone who is in contact with the afflicted. When will we focus on a cure for addiction rather than pour another drink and get all self-righteous about addicts. But hey, "I don't drink like that, use like that, push drugs on littles kids like that." Moronical, everytime you drink a beer you tell your kids it's ok to use dope. We teach our kids to use drugs and pretend the government should be responsible to fix our mistakes. But hey, I'm an addict. And I know I am guilty of all the problems I've listed. So I give what I can to fix a problem that cannot be fixed. because it must be done. So America, shut up or put up. Be a finacial sponsor to someone who needs treatment and you may find you've saved a thousand kids from from the soul consuming affects of drugs.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

Were is black tar heroine from? US street Heroin comes mainly from South East Asian sources.
The Taleban made a great show of a supposed moratorium on Opium production in order to gain support from the UN. The deal fell through when UN Investigators found that the Taleban had stockpiled a four year supply of Opium and were using the phoney moratorium only to drive up prices for their product while pretending to cooperate with US and Interpol Drug Enforcement Policies.

If you want to halt Afghan Opium production just stop the Europeans from buying the product. Switzerland would be a good place to start since its a major transfer point for Near Eastern Opium and Heroin.
The Swiss even supply free Heroin to Junkies there, and we all know about Amsterdams open and public IV drug use, as well as government licensed shops selling Pot and Hash.

Much of the US street drug supply now enters through Canada. The dope gets in through the ports there, and Meth factories are commonplace as well last I heard.
Party drugs like Ecstasy and LSD also come across the Canadian border in job lots from European Labs.
Add to that the massive prescription drug smuggling and you can see that the situation doesn't begin and end with some Afghan farmer planting a few poppies.

BTW
The disasterous use of Paraquat on Mexican Marijauna fields would make similar aerial spraying in Afghanistan problematic.
Those same fields are the only ariable land available for food crops, you can't risk poisoning the ground there.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

Pay attention.
Educate yourself.
Don't jump to conclusions.

focus: consumerism? instant gratification?
some people choose to live only for the moment.
many people don't know how to do otherwise.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

I'm with those saying that prohibition isn't working. Rather than legalizing and taxing, though, I think the solution is to make 'hard' drugs (e.g. heroin, cocaine, meth) available FREE, but only in sterile, uncomfortable clinics under medical supervision. That way, the addicts have a regular supply, access to counseling and rehab, and instant medical response to overdose / reaction. Meanwhile, the dealers lose the main part of their customer base (the addicts), and since many (most?) dealers are addicts themselves, they lose the motivation to find new customers. Kids won't be drawn to the clinics for kicks, because all the 'cool' is removed from the setting. The government takes over production, putting Middle-Eastern terrorists out of business - what's not to like? The cost would have to be far less than incarceration (not to mention death). Where ideas like this have been tried, the average age of addicts has begun to climb by - in one study I read - eleven months per year. In other words, the addicts weren't dying, and the kids weren't starting.

Oh, and pot? THAT, you legalize and tax. The only reason it's a "gateway" drug is that it's illegal. If trying pot didn't mean crossing the line to criminality, it wouldn't lead to the use of other drugs on the rationale "see - illegal drugs aren't that bad."

But why do I bother? The "war on drugs" is too effective a fear machine to be stopped. Keep attacking the problem with bigger and bigger guns, people - the victims will just keep getting younger and younger.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

My name is Ivan, and I am a freshman at wakeland high school, which is part of frisco independent school district. C

The largest problem with this world is the love of money. People think that money is the answer to everything, and in the process they lose sight of what is really important. People, and family. We have lost the closeness that we once had when families sat down together for breakfast and dinner, and communicated with each other. Now there is never enough time for that, everyone has their own agenda, communication is almost completely dead between parents and their children due to the the advent of the computer and the mighty I-Pod, Drugs are only a small part of the after effects of a society that has lost sight of what is really important; People, and careing about people instead of just careing about ourselves, and what we ourselves can selfishly acquire. We can all begin to repair the damages that we have all together caused by doing a kind thing for a stranger, especiall the homeless whom we like to ignore. Getting involved with our communities, adults and children, instead of just letting them run free with their friends. Communication and careing, are the keys to creating a new world, where drugs will not be needed. You could start by listening to your children, asking questions, and really listening to what they have to say. Your children are not dumb, they understand what is going on in this world, and as you can see it effects them greatly. Remember this.
Careing creates communication, and communication creates togetherness.

Good luck in everything you decide to do!

David in Henderson, Nevada

Heroin drug targets middle school students

It is disturbing that such a dangerous drug is available to these kids at school. Now here is the solution: Any person writher they have reached their majority or not MUST BE CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED MURDER IN THE FIRST DEGREE. Secondly, States must set up Constitutionally correct Superior Courts to Try and Sentence Drug related Cases, Like Traffic Courts. These courts could sentence Dealers Swiftly and Correctly to Sentences Up to Immediate Capital Punishment. This process would be analogous to other countries around the world. Thirdly, Drug Trafficers should be tracked through a special incarceration system with it's own jails, judiciary system, penitentiaries and parole system. This system would be not to disimilar to the current national sex offender system.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

Bravo to Mariela for her current rehabilitation. I am personally very proud of you, Mariela. May God bless you in the life ahead of you in many wonderful ways.

It is everybody's responsibility to advocate the lethal danger of drugs. Let's continuously promote the lifesaver words, "SAY NO TO DRUGS."

In our daily lives, let's keep on strongly combating this DEADLY CRIME and FATAL DISEASE against our children. Every minute counts, and it will definitely make a tremendous difference for all our children now and in the future.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

As an older high-school student, I wonder when parents would say "Not my child", or "not at their school". Those are the teachers who want to retire, who are just waiting out their last five years.

If they aren't going to care, other people do. Parents need to get involved. Yes, I, as a teenager, am encouraging an adult to actively get involved in a child's life. Take note of their moods. Does something change? Do they get more aloof? More furtive? In and out at odd hours of the night? Distressed when they come home?

Pry. Snoop. It might not be 'right', but what is more 'right' in the long run? Letting your child get addicted to drugs, or disturbing their 'privacy'?

Care. This is the situation that the American public appears to want so who am I to fight it? If I remember correctly Jefferson said something to the effect that you get what you deserve.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

as a old hippie i never thought drugs were a big deal but now that i have lost my deaf daughter to heroin my entire life comes into question and remembers gd the pusher man its all about money get a productive job n stop destroying so many lives over an unearned dollar

Heroin drug targets middle school students

WISH TO GET MORE ANGERED--FACT THAT HAS BEEN AIRED OVER PAST 6 MONTHS IN LOCAL N.Y MEDIA--THE POPPY PRODUCTION USED TO MAKE 93% OF THE WORLDS HERION--COMES FROM AFGANISTAN--AND THE PRODUCTION AND SALES HAVE DOUBLED FROM THERE SINCE OUR MILITARY PRESENCE 5 YEARS AGO.HOW DOES HAPPEN UNDER OUR MILITARY AND GOVERNMENT NOSES.AGAIN THIS IS A FACT-CHECK OUT YOURSELVES AND CONTACT LEGESLATORS AND ASK IF THIS IS PART OF THE WAR ON TERROR--WHOSE HERION PROFITS AS PER THE MEDIA GO TO THE TALIBAN AND AL QUEDA--TO FIGHT US.CRAZY BUT ALL TO TRUE

Heroin drug targets middle school students

Michael J. Mexico has a tremendous drug problem due to the same strains that exist in Texas. Peer pressure, social disorder, family stress, and the inability of so many young people not to inform on the drug sellers in their communities. Undercover operations should be immediately started at all schools that have a drug problem. Tylenol PM should be given the choice of advertising about the current problem or be remvoed from the shelves of drug stores. Any student that misses more then three days of school, or is showing signs of addiction should receive counseling. Teachers should be taught about the signs of addiction.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

If police know what areas are "known drug neighborhoods" why aren't they policed more aggressively? Are the police afraid of the dealers, or possibly profiting from ignoring their activities? It can be stopped but it is not. We all need to know why steps are not taken to cut the garbage before it spread to such large areas.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

I agree to many of the above comments. Yes, the writer realized it helped to put a cute girl up for the story. Yes, this is a problem that has been going on forever and it is time we do put maximum time to those that sell drugs to youth in and around school. I work with youth in the probation and dcfs system and many are on and/or have use substances and almost 80-85% of their parents have or are still actively using. But let's just not focus on this what about gang violence which supports drug selling. When are we going to get serious about this as well? Anything for a buck and the politicians are the reason. You cant pray or say the pledge of allegiance anymore but you can sell CD's to kids that verse about raping, killing and doing dope. Childmolesters live in every neighborhood now, but they have more rights than you do. The war in Iraq is about nothing but oil. Alan Greenspan said it on National TV, but nothing is done, noone cares as long as they can buy gas for their Beemer. Soldiers are dying everyday so that the politicians can make some more money. Afghanistan yea had a bumper crop of opium. That means more money for the dirty politicians. The muslims say we are the Great Satan. Well they aint far off. There is absolutely no morality in this country anymore. Anything goes. Kids watch Porn on TV now but TV is not allowed to show a cigarette ad. Politicians are arrogant about stealing money but nothing is said or done to them. Texas Governor Rick Perry was associated with an insurance company from the Bahamas that took over 800mil dollars from the State and then folded up weeks later and the money just disappeared. No one said a word. He also tryed to pass a law requiring ALL teenage girls in the State of Texas would have to take a Vaccine against the Papilloma Virus or could not go to school. Guess who owned a majority of stock in the company who was to sell Texas the Vaccine? You guessed it. No one said a thing. No one cares as long as the oil keeps flowing and the Beemer is full. Get ready all, its only going to get worse and the kids dont have a chance.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

instead of pouring money in terror war,the goverment should spend money here and make safe for our kids, shame in you bush.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

A lot of you people are sheep, you believe spending more money on the "war on drugs" and maybe stiffer penalties, or capital punishment is the answer, how has the w.o.d. gone so far? Teachers turned a blind eye back then- since we were all good kids- even the dealers who were friends of mine... children of the middle class, sons of MDs, lawyers, etc. It is no surprise many of us from my generation were lost to years of subtle, insidious addiction- moving from one drug to another until there was no escape. Addiction isn't the hopeless situation it is made out to be, if the people surrounding the addict act, and don't turn away from their responsibilities as humans- help a brother, sister, son, daughter, student, or employee out. Get them the help they need, send 'em to rehab at the 1st sign, and get them involved & supported in NA or AA young peoples groups early on. There is support and recovery out there. By the grace of God I have almost 22 years clean in NA, and I was no different than this girl- it started at school. Because folks ignored my using, and did not hold me accountable, it took me another 10 years of active addiction before I got busted & someone took a chance and sent me to rehab where I was introduced to the 12 Steps. The Steps work- even for young people!

Heroin drug targets middle school students

Most of you posters have it all wrong. Where are the real A mericans? 150 years ago if the laws didn't protect the citezens, they took up arms and protected themselves. The pink judges, the cops on the take, the unwilling citizens who refuse to get involved, the lack of any real punishment, all are contributing until it is spiraling out of control. Man wants to get high, especially when his life is unpleasant, stressful, cold, empty or hopeless. Look at the prime addiction, television. So few know or learn how to find joy within themselves, within their environment anymore. Parents pawn their kids off on the T.V. (at least a computer hooked to the Internet has the potential to capture and educate the curious and imaginative child).

Our society is based on wanting more pleasure from buying stuff which makes for a large economy but leaves us unfulfilled unless we have something(s) that we love to do that also earns money. People need to be taught how to turn their talents into individual business enterprise to make the whole thing work because it provides the missing ingredient that lack of causes people to look to drugs to fix - SELF ESTEEM. Every addict will admit that they suffer from poor self esteem - that they had it once but it faded away. Without it, addiction remains hopeless and rehab is near useless unless it can restore the spark and build a fire of confidence and pride.

Being an employee rarely does it. Family is out chasing the dollar. Religion tells you how you should feel and behave but usually doesn't provide a spiritual experience from which goodness naturally proceeds so it seems bogus. Unemployment and welfare don't do it. Do what you love and don't let anyone keep you from it - other people will pay money for it because it has the value of the PASSION you put into the creation and that is as desirable as any drug.

Then we need to STOP THE WAR ON DRUGS (the war on poor people - you cannot prosecute war on inanimate objects, ONLY on people) - drug abuse is a medical problem. Let the Government sell drugs to adults and let the medical system and social agencies help them. TAKE THE PROFIT OUT OF DRUGS because you can NEVER win a war on drugs. Quit spouting Archie Bunker wisdom and face the FACTS. Then do something about it - educate the person next to you until enough people demand change were the politicians are afraid we won't support doing what they already know is the only real solution.

Peace & Love from the City of Steel
Heroin drug targets middle school students

Quit placing blame on the government. Do you people know what Robitussin(sp) is? If a kid drinks a bottle of it they get a very imense high, any body can buy it. A lot of kids i went to school with would do this on a regular basis, they called it Robi-fry. then you have the kids sniffing inhalents, you'/ve got meth, youve got the prescription drugs, you have the acid and shrooms, the list just goes on and on. There is no way to get rid of the drugs and abusers, the only hope you have is to be involved in your childs life in a GOOD way so as they will talk to you about anything, then make sure they can see the honest truth about what the drugs can do to you, dont shield them from the violent and disturbing images, they must be able to see those to fully understand, what needs the most work i guess im saying is the censorship going on to hide the kids from the horrible truths of the world. Open their eyes to the issues completly and you will see better results.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

Having spent 25+ yrs during the last four Rep/Dems administrations "Fighting in the Drug War", I may have a slightly different view than some of the other commentors. First I do not condone the use of drugs & agree it's wrong for young children to be targeted & exposed to substances that can ruin their lives. In my opinion the powers that be, do not really have any strong incentives for stopping the drug trade. I view the drug business as a supply & demand economic problem, as long as there is a demand there will always be a supply. Having more than 50% of one million+ inmates locked up for drug possesion has done little to solve the problem. Every state has laws to deal with DUI, disordely conduct, consuming in public and various similar local ordances. If one could buy a few joints, even paying high taxes & controlled like tobbaco/alcohol...the street price would fall to the point that the dealers & suppliers would have little incentive to stay in business. Many of the other drugs could be regulated like in Sweeden & Denmark where they have medical supervised shooting galleries. The extra tax revenues could be used for treatment & education programs instead of paying for high priced law enforcement, prisons & courts and would decrease the number of victims of drug crimes. We already know that prohibition failed and there is only a very small market for moonshine. There will always be some who will use some form of drugs, as has been documented for centuries. At first there may be a slight increase in use if some drugs were legal as some would want to experment, however many would choose not to partake. With better education programs the use will most likely decline, as example look at the number of people no longer smoking or even starting over the past 10 yrs. Treating an addiction as a medical problem will yield higher dividends than increasing the number of inmates. My opinions are not politically correct, but again until the huge street profits are removed, the dealers & law enforcement will remain well employed.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

Let's boost the Federal budget for the war in Afganistan and Iraq and let keep a trillion dollar eye on Iran. It is one thing to be ignorant and not letting your child know the consequences of drugs at an early age, but think about it: as an adult we have so many things to focus on (mortgage, taxes, work, groceries...all those things pile up), and denial is only the natural reaction for something that's not on your agenda. Of course someone would much rather believe their son is an angel than have their mind cluttered by suspicions of drugs! Adults are extremely gullible when it comes to the innocence of their kids, this is true. I am not saying that denial is ok, simply that putting the blame on parents won't do anything. (In other words, I agree with your post for the majority, just not the part that we should blame the parents). We have to stress to parents to inform their children and teach them about drugs are at an early age. Not only teach them, but tell them how terrible they are, bias enough to get the point across.

And the government honestly needs to take this more seriously.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

"War on Terror"-most strong and appealing political word on these days, and being used with mighty expectation by almost all politician including Presidential Candidates and our President of USA.

Since when do we have to hold our artilery from firing against millions of enemy gathering to nurture thier viliest weapons in the public location?

There is "War on Terror" in the homeland, now targetting our children, hope of our Country, and we were informed that Afghanistan produced a bumper crop of Opium from the poppy fields and they are expecting a great harvest on this year. And I agree with the outrage over people who supply drugs to children (and adults as well). Many comments on this board are calling for harsher penalties for suppliers, and I agree. But elsewhere, on an almost daily basis, others are campaining to reduce mandatory sentences for the poor, misguided suppliers, and they will prevail if we don't make a lot of noise to our local and national politicians every time this ridiculous idea is raised.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

I started shooting heroin when I was 13 years old.. after 11 years of homelessness, prostitution, prison, and rehab after rehab, I finally got clean when I was 24. That was a little over 3 years ago. Unfortunately, once a person is addicted to heroin, be they a child or an adult, THEY are the only ones who can help themselves. My parents did everything they could for me. They took me to counseling, put me in inpatient and outpatient treatment, and finally gave me tough love and put me out, and turned me in to the police. After I was sentenced to 6 years for breaking into my father's house and stealing checks from my Grandmother, I just made up my mind that I was going to use my sentence time to work on changing myself, right down my thought processes. I still relapsed when I got out, albeit for a short time, but my point is, all anyone can do to help an addict is try to be there for them. Parents can make sure they have a good foundation for recovery by taking them to NA meetings and placing them in juvenile drug treatment centers, because the knowledge they receive there will be priceless when they've finally had enough. And don't hesitate to press charges on your own child. I really think if it hadn't been for me going to jail every 18 months or so, I may have died of malnutrition or worse.
And to those who are struggling with heroin- DO NOT GIVE UP. I was a dirty, nasty, homeless junky; a thief and a whore who wouldn't hesitate to rob an old lady blind. And now I am a hard working, upstanding, and most importantly HAPPY person with a future. I've mended my relationships with family and friends, and I do all I can to help others. If I can do it, ANYONE can.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

The Goverment should legilize and control the selling of drugs instead of leaving it in the hands of criminals.

Heroin drug targets middle school students

I think the government needs to be blame for all these.
