Salem, just out of curiosity, are you a Taliban supporter???! Just wondering, because you have not placed the blame where it needs to be placed! You need to take a history class and realize who really started this war!! Not all Iraqis think like you do either! I do know that in Islam a cat or (halal) animal holds much more respect in the animal kingdom, and dogs are thought to be rather dirty, but they are living creatures with hearts, souls, and feelings!
Sometimes in war the only true companionship which will show no judgment, undying strength, and true loyalty to a person is their pet (no metter what kind of creature it is). In this case dogs serve for the army in just a valuable position as humans! And unless you are an extremist yourself (which you've definitely made yourself sound like), you would realize that not everyone in the world shares the religion of Islam, nor hold the same opinions towards dogs!
I don't have any dogs in my house, and wouldn't. I do have four cats though. Whenever my spouse and I see dogs (our neighbor has two) we show them just as much respect and care! An animal can be the most important person in a lonely and/or lost person's life! They will love you no matter what!
For the Iraqi vet whom braved the possiblity of consequences to help bring a part of this soldier home that held so much love and joy is very refreshing! People like him are the TRUE ambassadors of Islam! Not those who run around shooting all of those who refuse to convert to Islam! Allah will punish those who kill innocents! It is not the right of ANY human to punish someone who refuses Islam. The right of giving and taking life is reserved for Allah alone!
Yes you could make the argument that American's are responsible for killing as well. Yet if you took a look at why they are fighting you would hold your tounge! They are defending the rest of the world from the terrorism that is blatantly rampant over there!

Politics is politics, but these soldiers bring to the war their human emotions and their belief in human decency. Last year 73 civilians a day were killed by US and UK forces. Saddam killed approx. 500,000 in 24 years, allied troops are at 88,000 in 5 years. Every year since the 2003 invasion has beem bloodier than the last. The Iraqi occupation is no better than the Saddam dictatorship. To the Iraqi people we were never liberators, We were invaders.

Bring our brave young men and women home now. Support the troops not the illegal policy that deployed them.

It amazes me how many people's response to this story is "Why don't we hear more stories like this, about the nice things that happen in war?"

Why don't we hear more about the good side of cancer, house fires, homelessness, child abuse? Face it folks, some things are horrible and any honest and fair accounting will be heavily tilted toward the sad, the tragic the depressing. War is at the top of the list and includes all the other tragedies above. Why would anyone expect to hear "happy talk" about a war?

Suzie - I'm a US very pampered canine who relates to all of her genus. You know, you people, we didn't start this.It isn't even over territory so we can survive. I'm VERY pampered, but I worry about the canines who don't have anywhere to go. And truth to to be told I worry about the humans who have associated themselves with special canines, and then feel they have to abandon them. It wouldn't be so bad , if only the humans would try to teach the abandoned canines how to hunt and survive. I hope my human will allow me the freedom to hunt small game.(I know it has been explained to me that venison is off limits.) But there are squirrels(fresh off the feeder) and moles, woodchucks and various dumb birds. Yeah, I'm a Golden Retriever and I like to hunt. If I could just get my jaws on that squirrel!!

A very good story, the animals there in Iraq are treated poorly as stated by Salem in Kirkuk. Obviously he doesn't care about them. I've been to Iraq first hand and have seen it. We had a few cats and a few dogs we kept as pets on the FOB I was at, too bad we had to euthanize a puppy that contracted rabies. There are more stories like these if you can dig them up, that also show the humanity that us Americans give to the good Iraqis. I don't think this is a great thing. This family is using these dogs so that the 'spirit' of their son will live on. However, they are going to fall so hard when the inevitable happens. Dogs, like humans, will grow old and die but they do it quicker than humans. Then it will be like losing their son all over again and tear open the wound and the healing will have to start all over.

This is a great story. I am glad the military is taking a different stance on dogs. My friend who came back from Iraq a year ago had two dogs that he had taken as pets. He bought food and got them vet care, but his commander said they were a health hazard and dangerous. interestingly enough they worked under huge high voltage power lines all day, near a power plant that belched some of the nastiest blackest smoke I have ever seen, contended with mortar attacks, snipers, and IED's, but the dogs were a health hazard.

This is a great story. I am glad the military is taking a different stance on dogs. My friend who came back from Iraq a year ago had two dogs that he had taken as pets. He bought food and got them vet care, but his commander said they were a health hazard and dangerous. interestingly enough they worked under huge high voltage power lines all day, near a power plant that belched some of the nastiest blackest smoke I have ever seen, contended with mortar attacks, snipers, and IED's, but the dogs were a health hazard.

We want our soldiers home as much as you do, they are our children. When a child is lost, there is no greater pain. No matter if it is an Iraqi child, or an American child, or martian child for that matter. The hurt is just as bad. We as humans are as wounded as anyone at word of a child dying, no matter who's child it is. No one should be killing anyone - for any reason. Best Friends the Rescue Orangization in Utah involved in this story was also instrumental in the placement of the "Vick" pit bulls some 20 of whom now live at Dog Town/Best Friends awaiting retraining and placement. Those who do not qualify for placement will live out their lives at Best Friends. What a wonderful organization.

Can't argue that we shouldn't have been there in the first place. When it comes to terrorism, There were a lot more violent and relevant places we could have tackled first. When it comes to despots with WMDs, there are plenty of places that ranked deadlier and more volatile than Iraq. When it comes to countries with filled with atrocities, there are places closer and a lot more violent than Iraq.

SO I'm not sure why we went there, sure Iraq had a measure of all those things and wasn't a ncie place to live, probably even if you were on the good side of Suddam. I'm sure it only got worse once we got there, and based on what I've read we did a lot a$$ backwards policies there, and squandered any possible good will in reconstructing the counrty.

I can understadn the frustration from the world where the rest of the world gets to pay the price, because the people of this country don't bother to research there potential leaders and what they stand for, and whay they've done...and instead elect a person they most would like to have a beer with.

The war on terror was originally a noble and worthwhile cause, but bad politics and greed turned into something we should all be ashamed of.

Salem please reread this story and see the truth you have missed the first time, the americans like any otehr people in the world seeks peace and security, we like to reach out and help others that are willing to be helped, and where we can. Politics abuses those charactics we have in this country and peverts it into its gains for the power hungry and those that support them . Things get done on our name, things we would never support, and be appalled by if it was in front of us.

The fact we don't take more ownership of our leaders and what they do. we've grown somewhat complacent as a whole. I see that changing now, I see hope, I hope it sticks and I hope us taking real ownership of our leaders becomes ingrained in our society.

This is a very heartwarming story, but it also is ironic. Why is it so easy to bring two orphan dogs to the US, but nearly impossible for Iraqi refugee families to come? So many people come forward to help animals, and no one extends a hand to help a child and her or his family.

This is a great story, and I am glad those 2 dogs were brought to the states to live their lives with the solders family. Blessing to that family and the dogs. Good work for all involved, the vet, airplane and to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and to BETA (in lebanon) BETA rescued over 500 dogs and cats when the war first started, all the family's left their pets when the bombing stated to take care of themselves. I know it was war so I am not holding it against them for leaving them, but BETA and Best Friends rescued over 500 dogs and alot of cats also. When the bombing started by the BETA rescue building they had to evacuate, Best Friends in Kanab Utah went their and flew 150 dogs and 100 cats to Utah. All the dogs and cats have since been adopted by family's here in America. I know because over thanksgiving weekend I drove to Best Friends and adopted the last dog from Lebanon that they had. Mikali, found on Mckalle highway with a broken leg and major injuries, due to the war. She is ok physically now except her back end has no feeling and she can not wag her tail. She walks and runs fine and I am so glad I could give her the "American Dream" living in a home , safe, loved and full of food!!! I feel for the children and innocents over there, but, they need to start standing up for themselves and changing their government, we should not have to do it for them, or sacrifice American lives. to many folks over there do not appreciate what we do for them or for their animals in this case. We should leave and let them just be....cause they will never change!!!

I agree that its a heartwarming story, but..... dont we have enough strays here in the states that could use loving homes? and I hate to point it out, but as someone whos been over there, does anyone have any idea what that general took the dog for? They see no problem with using animals for things that we would consider illegal here at home. Im sorry, i just have a hard time opening my arms when we have so much here at home we could fix first.

Don't get me wrong I'm happy to see these dogs have found a good home but last I checked you were fighting in Iraq to destroy Saddam's so-called stash of WMDs. Helping humans had little to do with the Iraq war or any other US foreign policy.
The US is one of the lowest contributers of aid as a percentage of GDP.
The US refuses to ratify the UN Convention on the rights of a child.
The US was also alone in voting against a declaration that education, work, healthcare, proper nourishment, and nat'l development are human rights.
No to banning landmines.
No to the Kyoto protocol.
No to helping the refugees in the Sudan.
No to a comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty (though the US wants everyone else to sign it)
The list goes on. I don't particularly care that America chooses its foreign policy on the basis of self-interest but I do despise the hypocritical 'we are just trying to help people.'

When you decide to serve your country and make the sacrifice and devote your life to serving your country then you can make comments about what you think. I have only began to understand the fact that people of the muslim faith have little respect for dogs. How sad is this? A dog only lives to love man. Period. They give unconditional love which man so desperately needs.
I understand how Iraqi's must feel over our invasion of their country (regardless of Hussein), but there are many who appreciate us (so I am told). And there are many soldiers that have given their all to protect the Iraqi people from political strife and Al Quada. So please, Salem, try to see this from the soldier's eyes. Salem, seriously, I feel you on this concern about dogs. All this concern about dogs! Now personally-nothing against those dogs-or any other ones-MORE POWER TO THEM- but come on!
We Americans have the capacity to feel compassion...for all?
Judging from our history and the way we have treated other nations in the past-America has little room to judge people on cruelty. This is not to say other countries don't have corruption,human rights abuses,etc. They do. But people have been and still have the capacity to be evil,corrupt, and wrong everywhere! There are no perfect,blameless countries free of sin in any part of the world-no shining cities on the hill;and,the sooner people consider this, the easier it will be for them to examine themselves and be holy, right,good,ethical,just, whatever-if they so choose.
With all this said. I am tired of the loss of life on all sides, the inhumanity of humanity towards its own in every country, class,race, creed, you name it. I even feel that animals should be treated with more respect but this piece is too melodramatic.

Also, for the people noting that people that abuse animals are most likely to mistreat people. You are right! But the case can be made that tyrants will treat their pets better than the human"subjects they rule over. Hitler, himself had a pet dog he love, if I can call correctly! Didn't stop him from slaughtering millions of people!Also, I would like to point out that people that may oppose this story do not necessarily advocate for the abuse of pets either. I know I don't. But,although the article is heartwarming I think this article is melodramatic fluff. I really do! Fluff in this case may not be all good or bad-but it is what it is!(As far as I'm concerned). I also agree with the poster that it takes away from the big picture.
