WASHINGTON – Two soldiers receiving Purple Hearts at Walter Reed Army Medical Center called Afghanistan a "forgotten war" being fought with not enough troops, supplies or support from the American people. I have to agree with those soilders who served in Afghanistan as I am here in southern Afghanistan right now. I am not a soilder but a contractor. My wife watches the news every day and askes me how bad can it be, no one every reports of anything happening here. I tell her of the rocket and mortar attacks, IEDs that are set off against Canadian, Dutch, American, British and other troops, the fire fights that the aviation units get invloved in. I don't think America has forgotten these guys, its just not "sensational" news to the media. They got bored with it. The troops over here do a hell of a job with the man power and equipment provided. I've been waching the news( CNN, BBC, Aljazeera) for any reporting on the usual springtime upswing in Taliban activities but none has been reported. Just that the Taliban say they will step up their attacks, well, they have been but not according to the new agencies. Now I see that they all switch to the Pakistan issue. The men and women deserve serving here deserve more than what is given them. This war is far from over here. Guess the reporters don't like to go places like this. Its easier to report from a hotel in Bagdad than the mountains in Afghanistan. Good luck to all those who serve and have served over here. You are what keeps the war where it should be and not on our front door step. That is until the Dems take office. Sorry I cant place my real name here, the agency I work for does not allow it.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

IT'S A SHAME OUR GOVERNMENT DIDN'T LEARN A LESSON FROM THE RUSSIANS. It is outrageous when all I hear about is the war in Iraq. Maybe some people do not realize that Bush did not declare war in Afghanistan, yet we have been there since October 2001. IRONIC. Also if you have not served in Afghanistan, you have no idea how little our men and women get. There is not enough support, supplies and love for them. My brother passed away in Afghanistan in August of '06. We would send him and his battalion care packages all the time, yet when we received his belongings back from Afghanistan, there were picture after pictures of them day in and day out hooked up to IV's because of dehydration and lack of supplies. I can’t even begin to tell you all how heart broken I get every time I hear of another fallen soldier. It breaks me down, yet, I think maybe at the end we will succeed somewhere and make some progress or movement for people over there. Then I think we went to fight a war for someone’s dad. Revenge is never good, trying to fight your dads battle will get you know where.
Before my brother passed, he said, we could have come home along time ago if someone else was elected and he was not reelected, but we are afraid of the new. We go with what we are familiar with. He told me to look back and see when the last time a president only served one term.
I cry thinking about it. My brother and his brothers and sisters love there country so much, they listen to what they are told to do.
No we have lost some at the ultimate price.
God rest all of our fallen soldiers, and may God be with those still there.
Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

Remind us why we need to support two(2)failed colonization attempts? The "troops" are volunteer, paid extra for combat and can't gain promotion except in times of war. They helped steer us into the twin nightmares, they wanted it more than anyone, let them deal with the consequences. They want to go be boy scouts with guns and shoot some indigenous peasants then they get their ass kicked. And now they want to whine. We killed 5 million Southeast Asians during our little foray into Indochina and I don't hear them bitching. I do not support Colonialism, I support withdrawal. If it truly was a Democracy then the troops would have to accept partial victory in The East and come home. Now! not in 50 years. But due to the fact that they no more represent me ( a tax paying citizen )than a flying pig, they are on an illegal expedition that only they(and the war profiteers) support. Its the Army's folly , let the Army suffer the consequences. Vietnam sucked, this is way worse.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

My son just graduated from the Marines. He said he would like to go to Afghanistan to his part.God bless the US Marine.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

My son just graduated from the Marines. He said he would like to go to Afghanistan to his part.God bless the US Marine.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

to "very worried"
Its easy to critize or military and the situation in Afghanistan from the sidelines...the truth is that enitire region is like an ungoverned wild west. We didnt invade them for no reason, incase you forgot Al Qaeda was born in Afghanistan and makes it home there. We were attacked first by Al Qaeda and we are at war and Afghanistan is the theater for those reasons. I spent some time there myself and my aircraft came under fire and the base came under attach weekly. Its still very much a warzone...and we should be there. One that I get a little hung up on is that, as Americans, it seems many of us have forgotten what real sacrifice is about. Look at how Desert Storm got played out in the media: it was a nice, "push-button" little war where the biggest thing our troops had to worry about was friendly fire.

I got the feeling, just after 9-11, when people across the country were screaming for blood and vengeance, that they all figured it'd be that same type of "easy" war. The troops would go over there and hang out while our stealth bombers, smart bombs and cruise missiles would blow up everything even remotely enemy. Then, they'd walk in, liberate some villages, and come home.

President Bush *did* tell us the war would be a long, hard one. I don't envy anyone who has had a friend or loved one go to war, but as terrible a thing as war is, it is *not* a quick, easy thing. Our troops are committed to sticking it out to the end. Why can't we be? We might miss them while they're gone, but honestly, who is suffering more? The guys on the ground, or we who are back here in our comfort zones?

We do have power, as voting citizens, to make changes if we really, truly want to. We *can* get our boys (and ladies, now) the support they need, if we want it enough to actually do something about it.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

its a shame, you look at world war 2 and the pacific was treated the same way, while everything was focused on the atlantic, its not right both afghanistan and irag should have all the equipment they need, yes its about oil. our government is so out of touch with reality it really sucks. No stories from the Christian Science Monitor or independent correspondants. No logical questions of how the war is being run. Only references to anti-Bush, it's all about oil, no weapons of MD. The standard communist propaganda line. It took us so dang long to get our troops over there. How long would it have taken to load the trucks w/ WMDs? And 2 days to transport them to Iran -- or less. It was the CIA that advised Bush of the weapons -- yet we never hear of that in the news. It's always Bush's fault. Why didn't we use paratroopers to block what few key roads there were out of Iraq? You youngsters don't remember that it was the CIA who recruited Cuban Freedom Fighters. And trained them. And planned their landing on Cuban soil. Our Navy was ordered to supply offshore bombard-ment. Our Air Forces were to supply ground support. Then the CIA reported to the Kennedys that Russia was going to enter the fray if we supplied support to the Cubans. While the landing boats were approaching the beaches, all of our support was called off. Russian fighters slaughtered/wiped out the landing troops. Castro got rid of the dissenters. The United States was made to look like a paper tiger. (It would be quite militarily irrational for Russia to get into a cat fight that far from their neares supply bases.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

God Bless our Troopers in Afghanistan! My Father died in WW2 and my first cousin in Korea, they must be rolling over in their graves with the unpatriotic attitudes of our country.Sadly, I have friends some of who served and some of who didn't, but their general attitude is not to let their kids get involved. The invasion of Iraq isn't protecting our freedom, it's jeopardizing it. Each tour(he's in the airborne and was relieved by the tenth mtn. before this tour) has seen records set not only in firefights but also in casualties suffered-this hardly signifies a downturn in violence. The causes of this are numerous, notably the poppy eradication program that destroys farmers crops and turns them against us but also the lack of troop strength and support to maintain a strong presence in all the lawless areas of the country. There are areas where every time they go on patrol casualties are suffered there. While most people know nothing of what goes on in Afganistan, I worry every day for his safety and feel my stomach drop every time his wife or my mother call me. Due to the nature of enemy combatants and their use of Pakistan border jumping/I.E.D. deployments/drug smuggling/black market weapon enterprises, Afghanistan is deemed a "quiet war". A good number of special operatives are utilized more than conventional service members are because of the enemies ability to fight in a guerilla war. The majority of conventional units feel forgotten, but they are not, most conventional units are utilitzed for vital support and well as having a conventional combat unit (Infantry)on stand by and for presence while special operations units operate in the very nature of their conception, silently. Afghanistan is not safe, it is not quiet, and the Fallen Brave are not forgotten.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

I am in Afghanistan working as a civilian contractor. Also, yes, Russia had problems there, but thats because we backed Afghanistan with millions of anti-armor weapons."Cold War remember"??? Iraq is the main event because it is complicated with Syria sneeking weapons of mass destruction into thier country, as well as Billions of Dollars to be used against Isreal at a later time. Also, and even worse is that I.E.D.s and insurgents from IRAN flow in because My President Mr. Bush did not hold true to the statement "if you are not with us ,you are against us".If "Americans" didn't back down in the War on Terror and dessert Bush,(I know, you forgot you supported him at first!)there would be less influence from outlaw regiems. If Iraq is about us taking Oil,why are we paying $4.00 per gal after all these years? Remember what happened on 9/11/01? There is this guy name Osama that had a few nut cases fly some plane into some building and murder thousands of people. Afganistand had him and wouldn't turn his sorry butt over so we went in to get him. Now we are stuck there because Pakistan won't let us into that country to get him. He will be the guy on the kidney dialisysis machine sitting next to the Soviet brief case nuke waiting for us to end our long relationship with him.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

I AM THE MOTHER OF A SON IN THE ARMY CURRENTLY SERVING A TOUR IN AFGHANISTAN. AFTER HAVING MY SON HOME FOR A TWO WEEK LEAVE 6 MONTHS AGO AND LISTENING TO HIM, I TO CAN ATTEST TO THE FACT THAT OUR SOLDIERS ARE DEFINITELY IN A BATTLE. MY SON AND HIS UNIT ARE SHOT AT EVERYDAY. THEY ARE STATIONED SOMEWHERE NEAR THE PAKISTAN BORDER. MY SON HAS LOST SEVERAL FRIENDS SINCE BEING IN AFGHANISTAN AND HAS SEEN THINGS THAT NO ONE SHOULD EVER HAVE TO SEE. IT HAS ALWAYS BOTHERED ME THAT AFGHANISTAN AND OUR SOILDERS THERE SEEM TO HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN BY THE NEWS MEDIA BECAUSE ALL YOU EVER HEAR ABOUT IS IRAQ. I HOPE AND PRAY THAT AMERICA WILL REMEMBER AND SUPPORT NOT ONLY THE TROOPS IN IRAQ BUT ALSO AFGHANISTAN. I KNOW THAT BOTH ARE JUST AS BAD BECAUSE I ALSO HAVE A SON-IN-LAW IN THE AIR FORCE WHO HAS ALREADY SERVED ONE TOUR IN IRAQ AND IS NOW GETTING READY FOR A SECOND TOUR AND A NEPHEW IN THE MARINES WHO IS CURRENTLY IN IRAQ. SO FROM THE MOTHER OF A MILITARY FAMILY I AM ASKING AMERICA TO PLEASE REMEMBER ALL OUR SOLIDERS NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE OR WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND PRAY FOR THEIR SAFE RETURN TO THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS WHO LOVE AND MISS THEM. I KNOW MY HEART BREAKS EVERYDAY FOR THE FAMILIES WHO HAVE FALLEN SOLIDERS. GOD BLESS AND KEEP OUR TROOPS SAFE AND LET THEM KNOW THAT AMERICA SUPPORTS THEM AND WILL NEVER TURN THEIR BACKS ON THEM. Crosby. Thank the maker that you voiced your opinion. You enjoy your freedoms as much as I enjoy mine and you validated the freedom I have to volunteer to fight for my country. I know, that like me, a lot of guys over there kissed their wives and children good bye and went over to Afghanistan and did and are doing the jobs they swore to do. I, like them, would rather fight them there down range rather than here, so our children aren't watching their fathers and mothers protect them from front lines on U.S. soil all the while protecting our and your freedoms at home. Service members are taxpayers as well. I know I pay mine so, not only do I have the right to freedoms for my taxes but, I fight for them as well. Just like the guys over there right now.
As for the colonization issue. I've been there and have seen first hand the ravages that war can produce and have seen the potential for Afghanistan to be a paridise. I've talked to her people and have heard first hand what they would want and it's not too far different than that which we enjoy in our country. Still, I live in America and would not want to live anywhere else in the world, and I think I come real close to what the guys slugging it out in the field feel as well. So stop lumping your feelings of why the administration wants our forces there with the pulse of the individual service Men and Women. Generally we serve so we can have that "Right to Life, Liberty and to persue Happiness" in our own way just like you have.
To the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airman out there and waiting on deck. Go get em and God Bless.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

Dear David Andrew Crosby Vail, CO

You're an idiot.

If you'd studied the military assessments of Iraq, you would have realized the US military did not want to go in there and when ordered to, it did not get what was needed to do the job.

There's no "Colonization" attempt in Afghanistan. After reading this... I would say not alot of people have there facts straight. It just sucks that we can't express our true feelings alot of times because we don't want to say the wrong thing and end up in a not so good situation. Even us military personel have mixed feelings about this war but the majority of us believe in the war. I'm not talking about brainwashed people either. They don't feed us bullcrap. It's about getting the mission done in the military but we do have feelings on these also.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

To David Andrew:
Dear Sir,
We "Boyscouts" seem to be doing our jobs so that you can have the freedom to speak as boldly as you have. It somewhat makes me happy to know that you as an individual can rant and rave. On the other hand we as a people should respect each other inside our own borders. I lived in Boulder for about three years. I heard your opinions from others in the area. While there I would be treated two different ways. While in uniform I was actually spit on and called many names by "non violent hard working tax paying people". While in civilian clothes I was treated nicely. It is amazing to me why you have the rights you do but that is the beauty of living in the United States of America! If you do not like what this government does, there is always Tibet and or China, try Russia while you are there. Better yet jump on a plane and head to Afghanistan and hug up on the Taliban. Spread your peace and popcorn to the oh so kind Afghans. If you do I'll be watching as they behead you on National TV. You my friend should be happy to have your upscale house up in Vail with all the others while we lowlanders fight for you to be able to sit up there. Come walk a mile in my boots. I believe in freedom, not because of the Army but because my Father did and so did his. I want it for my son. I want it for you. It is ok to have an opinion but there comes a time for you to put up or shut up. Don't go halfway with your beliefs do something about it. I did. I fought in Afghanistan, drove a tractor to a village to grow crops instead of poppies. I also got shot at for trying to help someone. What have you done besides protest? Did you actually say I don't like it here I think I will fix my situation. I hear Mexico is open to what you have to say. I hear Canada is open as well. North Korea would really love to have you as their guest. I fought in Iraq too. I suppose I was trying to colonize the poor Iraqi citizens. Actually I spent most of my time responding to bad people killing other people. Other people would be those that are good such as a four year old girl, her brother, mother and father. This was done while they sat outside their home and received two mortar rounds in the yard that they sat in. So I stand up for the people of Iraq, I stand up for my fellow citizens when they are to scared to do so. Am I wrong? If I fought for the Tibetans would I be wrong? Would I be trying to colonize them also? I never got rich serving in either Iraq or Afghanistan. I spent long periods of time away from my family. We don't profit from war, that is those of us in the fight. Regroup mister peace man, go get your buddies in Boulder and do something meaningful instead of flapping your gums. Do you have what it takes for even a simple tea party? I think you will continue to sit there and do nothing but talk. But thanks for letting me, and all the other folks that have been or are in Iraq and Afghanistan, know that we have done what is right so you can say what you want. Have a nice day, and remember to thank a vet.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

Mike, Colorado- You're an idiot.
My son is serving in Afghanistan, and I am tired of people spouting out with nonsence they know NOTHING about.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

My son in law is in Afghanistan and I'm very proud of him. Anyone in the service now is in voluntarily, helping this country maintain freedom. If as some of you say the democrats will get us out, there will be genocide in Iraq. I do believe Hillary and Obama are to smart to be responsible for genocide. There are making political false statements right now to get elected. AND, if you see someone in uniform, say "thanks", or, if the spirit moves you, buy 'em a meal. The chap who did that for my son-in-law and his family sent a message which reverberated. Not bad for $20 - you can spend that on a couple of lattes and not feel as good. For 30 years I wouldn't talk about Vietnam, because of an old lady's spit. Let's not impose that obligation of silence on our young this time around. Do something decent for them and feel good about yourselves.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

People refer to the Russians and their failures in Afghanistan. The British had the same problem in the 19th century. They ultimately decided that there was no way to "civilize" the Afghani people. But really, they only want to be left alone. I would hope that we would react the same way if they came to the U.S. to liberate us from the tyranny of the oil companies and Hollywood morality. We probably could have found and dealt with Osama Bin Laden and company with some Navy Seals and CIA intelligence, but when 9/11 hit, our intelligence agencies had no Arabic speakers and wouldn't have been able to penetrate Al Qaeda on a bet. Unfortunately, this enemy cannot be bought off - people of faith can be a very powerful enemy.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

David Andrew Crosby..Its a good thing you dont live too far from the Canadian border, as Im sure the minute all hell breaks loose here in our country, you will be the first to defect..Why dont you just go NOW..we dont need spineless criticism. Les Grau, who oversaw the US Army's part in supporting the mujihadeen. It reads amazingly like the stories of today, understrength troops, in a country that does not want them there, subject to ambushes, raids, shelling. At least the US troops don't have to contend with the wealthiest superpower funding the guerrillas who are fighting them.

The fact is, Afghanistan is the last place anyone wants to send an army. No one has done well there, from Alex the Great on. What other country has heriditary ambush sites passed down in families?

Another US colonel told me he met two young Afghan officers, who had gotten their education in the Soviet Frunze Academy, their West Point. They told him how lucky and honored they felt to be Afghan officers at a time when there was a foreign occupier (at that time the Soviets) in their country. Where would you care to guess they are now?

We summoned this genie, and trying to stuff it back in the bottle just breaks the bottle. Best thing, get our troops the hell out of there. NOW.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

While many people have posted heartfelt messages, some have given no thought to the long-term effect to pulling out precipitously(conveniently forgetting what happened in South-East Asia after we left Viet-Nam.) America is not the bad guy and while we get things wrong now and then, the world is a better place because we have been here and paid with our blood time and time again to fix problems,. It is easy to blame Bush for everything that went wrong but war is messy and not organized. Viet Nam could have been over quickly if we had had the resolve to put whatever was necessary to win on the line. Goldwater had it right " Decide if it is in our National defense interest to get involved, and if it is the right thing to do, then do whatever we need to do to win quickly" LBJ had a 'better way'(RIGHT) The same thing could be said for this war. Actually, we did win the war , we just did not plan very well for the follow-up. I did a two year tour in Nam(LRRPs),and I am very proud of all of our troops; no matter what they do but I feel closest to the guys with the CIBs.( Combat Infantryman Badge) It is never easy and each war is different. I do worry about our strength as a people and a nation. Are we strong enough to last? I wonder. Our liberal press and educational elite have just about destroyed us. If you doubt the effectiveness of our educational system, go back and read the comments, paying close attention to spelling, and sentence structure. I pray to God that we find our voice as a people, reclaim our heritage, limit our federal goverments power and thus become the envy and the guilding light for the world once again.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

My son is in Afghanistan serving in the US Army, and it doesn't matter where they are, they need the support of the American public. He chose to serve while his most of his friends are still "finding themselves." The American public needs to realize that the military is at the mercy of the politicians, so let's elect those who make wise decisions.

I think all young people need to serve their country either at home or in the service to give back to this country instead of living self-absorbed lives whining about working and going into debt. Guess what? Not everybody gets a trophy.

If you value our way of life, whether you're a dem or rep, you better pay attention because we are weak and spoiled. The military does our business so the rest of us don't have to. Be grateful you weren't on those planes that went down on 9/11. And, if you don't like our way of life, take one of those planes and leave on it. Bet you won't though, huh? It is a lot easier to just complain and point the finger.

With all our problems and issues right now, we are still the best country in the world. We just need to right ourselves and get back to our core values.

Support the military. It could be you or yours one day!
Sua Sponte! (Look it up!)

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

My brother was over in Iraq, then volunteered for Afghanistan, and he can totally see the difference between the two. Afghanistan has been completely forgotten, and all of the soldiers there can attest to that. They see the papers and news talking about a roadside bomb going off and hurting someone in Iraq. But, in Afghanistan, his whole convoy could be attacked by a militia with RPG's, killing a few of his comrades, and they would not hear anything about it, anywhere. He says they all have very low morale because of this sort of behavior with the US media.

When he was over in Afghanistan (he came back in January,) his unit was working closely with the UN forces, but they were even more under-armored than the US troops were. They were driving little more than lightly-armored pickups with a gun in the back. So, it sounds like the US is not the only country that is under-supporting the war in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

Alright so that guy from vail that says the army is bad or whatever. Too bad W. has never been interested in Fighting it.

If only our media would tell us the details of What Is In the Iraqi Oil Law and who Wrote it (an American oil-consulting firm) we would have a chance to stop fooling ourselves after 5 years and See the Real Truth about the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.............. OUR SOLDIERS IN AFGHANISTAN WERE SENT TO DEFEND OUR FREEDOM FROM TERRORISM, OUR SOLDIERS IN IRAQ WERE SENT TO FIGHT FOR OUR OIL --- Well, it's the Iraqis' oil but Bush Treats it as if it's Our oil.

----- General Petraeus himself said Al Quaeda is "less than 5%" of our enemy in Iraq, but Afghanistan is "equally important" as Iraq....... Google 'Iraqi Oil Law', look for info from the Associated Press, Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, etc. That Law is what the Iraq Study Group (co-led by Bush family friend James Baker) meant when they said we should "Privatize" Iraq's Oil and pull the troops out. The Oil was the only part of Baker's plan that this so-called "Christian" George W. Bush is in favor of.

--------------- Getting control of Iraq's oil for our oil companies is supported by some who say it's in Iraq's best interests too. But Iraq's own government has been Refusing to Even Vote on the Iraqi Oil Law for over a Year Now -- It's time to GET A CLUE ! The Iraqi people want control of their own oil - they don't want to share the profits with us. They want our troops OUT and that's why Moqtada Al-Sadr's militias are attacking our troops and using their influence to shut down Iraq. The majority of Iraqis Support Al-Sadr. It's the Iraqi people (sorry to say) who are our enemy in Iraq, not the tiny few thousand remaining Al Quaeda hangers-on. We have made ourselves into the Iraqi people's enemy. Al-Sadr & the Iraqi majority Shi-ites could wipe out what's left of Al Quaeda over there in a couple of months, if we would just get out of their way and stop helping Al Quaeda's old pals, the minority Sunnis.

------------ Meanwhile, after we made France and Germany do most of the fighting in Afghanistan FOR us from 2003-2006, now we've got clueless morons who never knew this, who are criticizing our "allies" for not supporting us in Afghanistan. Our allies are sick of suppporting us while we camp out in Iraq trying to pressure the Iraqis into letting us control their oil production. The whole world knows this except the American people -- thanks to our TV news and our politicians, who don't want to be "politically incorrect" and offend our troops or their families. Well, our troops should NOT be offended to know why they've been sent to Iraq. The Bush people are the ones who ordered them there. Maybe it would help if our troops and their families convinced themselves that we need the oil or that George Bush knows what's best for our Iraq's future, even if the Iraqis are against it.

--------- LAST BUT NOT LEAST - Afghanistan has raised and sold around $30 Billion Dollars worth of HEROIN in the past 5 years. Afghanistan is Full of Al Quaeda and their Buddies, the Taliban. Where do you suppose all that Heroin money is Going ?!? Probably to fund the next terrorist attack on us ! Al Quaeda of Afghanistan already got caught trying to liquid-bomb American passenger jets in 2006 ! The TV news never reminds us about that..........and JOHN DOE from WV is Dead Wrong about Democrats. Ever since John Kerry in 2004, Dems have wanted to fight the Real War on Terror in Afghanistan and Pakistan, clean out Al Quaeda and those Heroin $$ Fields once and for all and get our noses out of Iraq's oil, which is all Bush cares about.

-------- If good ol' Pres Bush really WAS "taking it to the Terrorists", he would have had 100 Thousand soldiers in Afghanistan all this time, not in Iraq. The dead brother of "A Hero's Big Sister" was RIGHT in what he said before he was killed....If Kerry had been elected, he would have moved the troops to Afghanistan and Pakistan, and we would have WON this thing and been HOME by now. But the so-called "liberal" TV news media told us back in 2004 that Kerry's plan Wasn't Even Worth Discussing cause Kerry had "the same goals" as Pres. Bush (according to Wolf Blitzer): To Stablize Iraq.. ...I guess that means the media would've been more into Kerry if he had been anti-Iraq War ?!? At the same time most of the country supported the war ?!?

------ Too bad we have a media that's only interested in sucking up to Republicans -- while they PRETEND to be critical of Bush for "mispronouncing words" and other stupid stuff nobody cares about.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

Shame on the media - In the beginning, they made it "un - American" to not be FOR the war! American Soldiers and Marines are paying the price for your Rights - sometimes with their lives. I hope you enjoy your freedom! I have yet to read a single post above that said, "Gee I didn't know there was a problem! I'd better enlist and go see how I can serve!" I assure you that "The Answer" is NOT to "QUIT" to give up and crawl back home as so many of you advocate! Yes, we have problems getting ammo at times. True, we often get little press coverage. The food - I'd better not "go there" - don't get me started... None of this is President Bush's fault directly. Things here seem to be gradually getting better, at least where I am. You want to blame someone? How about Bill Clinton, who tried (along with all the other "hippies") as hard as he could to EVISERATE the US military that he "loathed" in the 90's? Where are the 5th, 7th, 9th, and 24th Infantry Divisions now? I know where! They "went away" in the early 90's! No one was concerned then, when "the cotton (was) high, and the livin' (was) easy," to borrow from Gershwin. I was in the Army then - I saw it! THIS IS NOT IRAQ!!! The terrain here is rugged, the roads are mere trails and there are few paved roads. There is no real power grid, or railroads. If you want to draw parallels with WWII, I suggest you examine the Italian Campaign of 1944-45: several nations, each with its own agenda, using incompatible equipment at times to try to communicate and fight. The problems here are not easy to fix: for example, the Taliban does not wear uniforms like the North Vietmanese Army, so we have to be careful who/ where we shoot. Our goal is not to "go kill people," but if people threaten us, they will be "dealt with." Our goal is to try to help the Afghans get on their feet after decades of conflict and establish a functioning government, but interlopers, especially from the tribal regions of Pakistan do their best to disrupt and destroy. Most everyone in this part of the world is corrupt - it is just a matter of degree. It is an acceptable thing to the Afghans to be corrupt, a part of Tribalism, because it is a part of their culture, and they can't see why we Westerners become so apoplectic about it. They have a hard time understanding thier culture, and we have a hard time understanding theirs. The enemy is not Islam as much as TRIBALISM, but no one wants bother to learn about that. (If you DO want to learn about it, type: Steven Pressfield "It's The Tribes Stupid" into a search engine.) You can also read Mark Steyn's "America Alone" and realize just how much of a threat to America that radical Islam is - if you can be pried away from all the "bread and circuses" of American Idol, NASCAR, Brittany Spears, et al in America. I am proud to have done my small part here. I am proud to have been a Soldier and to have fought for my country. "For those who have had to fight for it, freedom has a taste the protected will never know." I'm sorry to have rambled, but I just got fed up after reading all the comments above from all the "quitters" and "Hate America First-ers."

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

This is a perfect example of how the media frames the reality of their audience, in this case, the American people, including members of our governing body. I applaud and am thankful that so many care, but words and yellow ribbons don't reach the men and women fighting or wounded and feeling forgotten.

I decided over a year ago that it was time to do something myself so started adopting service men/women in Iraq and Afghanistan. I send cards, letters, postcards, and care packages every week or two - despite a limited budget. It's been a wonderful blessing. My current project is to get friends and neighbors pitch in washboards (for washing clothes by hand), Shoe Goo (for repairing boots and clothing), and bath wipes. One of my soldiers in 'Stan was thrilled to receive a washboard, soap and Scrabble game for one of their remote Combat Outposts. He mentioned how they don't get a lot of supplies and even the smallest things really boost morale. I also sent 188 phone cards - obviously a bit hit.

After seeing how overlooked Afghanistan is, I decided to focus on troops there as much as possible. How about you - grab some friends, church members, or relatives and have fun with it. You can get names of soldiers who are requesting letters or care packages from many organizations. I like www.anysoldier.com because you can search for soldiers in Afghanistan or by keywords.

If you really care about troops in Afghanistan, do something. Send a card, letter, or care package every month. Talk is just talk.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

Sometimes people truly amaze me with this idea about war. People.... afghan is not a forgotten war. NATO is not doing there part well enough. The U.S. has greater issues to contend with in Iraq, but that doesnt make afghan any less important. NATO needs to step up to the plate and do more in Afghanistan. As soon as Iraq settles down, we'll be in greater force in Afghanistan. Iraq should have been easier to take over. There people were ready for a change for over a generation. Iran's meddling has cause this delay. Iran has help to create a potential civil war between religions (maybe 3 - shiite, sunni, and extremist alquada). Based on a power struggle. I dont really care if I didnt spell there names correct. Many people dont understand that Iran's secret war to infiltrate Iraq and seize power was going on long before the U.S. was involved.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

So many people are blind. I just sat here and read every one of these comments. I was so touched that the over whelming majority of you, regardless of how you felt about these wars, do support our troops. I can't thank you enought for letting these boys, like Jesse, know that the friends they've lost,(the first concern that Jesse had, when he finally became conscience, was for the other soldiers he served with) or what they themselves have given, hasn't been in vain. Jesse was with the 173th Airborne, stationed near the Pakistan border. From the other comments I've read,(I think DR from Billings wrote it best) everyone who has had someone stationed there, has heard almost exactly the same stories as we did. They are engaged in combat several time a day, their troops are spread too thin to do the job that really needs to be done. I have never heard Jesse "whine" about what happened to him. Instead I've seen a 20yr old man come back from war without the use of his legs. Within 60 days after the incident in Afganistan, he was at Liberty Mountain Pa. learning how to ski again. By the time that day was over he was comming down one of the biggest slopes they had. Jesse was only trying to let people know what the troops in Afganistan are going through. They are fighting and dieing just like the troops in Iraq.
I used to have nighmares about how I might react if someone treated Jesse the way I had seen our troops treated when they came back from Viet Nam, so I just had to responsed to the statements made by Mr. Crosby. First, I want to make it clear that I respect everyones right to disgree with our goverment's policies, and they can excerise that right by voting. I find that a lot of these people that complain the loudest won't even get off their butts to go out and vote. They take no interst in their civic duties at all. What I can't abide is disloyalty. I was born in North Central Montana right after WWII. I grew up pledgeing allegiance to our flag every day in school, my mother taught me to be proud that I was an American. I tried to instill that same pride in my children, and their children. If America was as bad as some want to paint it, we wouldn't have an illegal alien problem, or have so many people from other countries trying to get here. Mr Crosby really doesn't know what he is talking about when he talks about the "troops". Most of them were already in the services when this all started, and to imply that they wanted to go fight a war is absurd. To say that they can only get a promotion in war time is one of the sillest statements I've ever heard. I have two sons-in-law that are in the service. Neither has ever had to see combat, thank God, but both of them have gained plenty of rank since being in. Mr Crosby, I would also like to see you with these indigenous peasants, as you call them. These are battle hard combatants, and they love people like you, who will sprout their anti-american propaganda before they behead you. If you really were aware of what is going on in Afganistan you would also realize that most of the Taliban and Al Qaeda are not even Afganistanian. So who was really doing the colonizing? It seems to me that the radical extremists thought they had found a safe haven in Afganistan to set up their training camps. They used terror to control the population, it was all about gaining power over the people. These people were controlled to the point that they were even told how they were to dress, and who was allowed to be educated.
I really have to wonder if there are any principles or believes that Mr. Crosby would be willing to fight and die for. He certainly doesn't believe that the lives of 3,000 Americans, or the fact that his country was attacked is worth fighting for. I was wondering Mr Crosby, were you one of Prof. Churchill's students? I would have more respect for people like Mr. Crosby, if they had the guts to stand up for the principles they say they believe in. They should found a country who's government policies are more to their liking, instead of putting down the people who are loyal to this country, and show that loyalty by serving their country.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

T.C. Thompson -
"Pray to God that another democrat is not elected and let this country be the laughing stock of the world community again"

Scapegoating Bush's successor is inevitable but misguided. It doesn't matter who or what party is elected - Bush's catastrophic incompetence, failed policies, and allegiance to big money over working Americans have already set the country on a long dark path. I have friends in Europe who already believe the U.S., and especially Bush, is a laughing stock. They view Bush as a joke and completely unqualified leader, but also evil on a scale similar to Hitler. This is not my view (about being on a Hitler level, anyway), but I'm just saying - too late to worry about being a laughing stock and far too late to try to blame the looming problems on Bush's successor. I'm embarrassed and repulsed about the decisions and actions of Republicans and Democrats alike but especially Bush, so now look at each politician to be accountable for his own actions - forget parties and demand personal accountability and integrity.

Hopefully the next Pres will be able to *begin* reversing the course already set in place. It will take decades at the very least. If that is even possible at this point - America's reputation and credibility have been permanently stained IMO. Now our politicians (every party) would rather argue and serve their self interests than do the hard things necessary to put this country back on the right track. Unless they serve the people and country's best interests over greed and power and demand integrity and honor in their dealings with each other and the world, it is completely impossible.

Again, if people are concerned about our soldiers in Afghanistan, DO something to DIRECTLY support them. Send a care package.

Afghanistan: ‘It's a battle’

God Bless all of our troops no matter where thry are.
What, or is there anything I can do to get more for our troops? It is almost a garentee that somewhere there is someone completely ignorant to what is really going on. I don't blame you but I do hope someday you realize what you wrote. Out here (Afghanistan) I do think the hardest part is honestly finding the reason why we are here. We know slightly why and most of us support it. But you tend to think, why are we fighting this war when all america has done is forget it? It's kind of shameful to think people could just wash there hands of what is really going on. To think the country where it all began, where the war is truelly coming from and about..our own country has forgotten. That's sad, not for us cause we are here, but for those who have forgoten.
