DALLAS – I drink a lot of Starbucks. By my calculations, I average at least ten trips a week to Starbucks, where I order either:A: A triple grande latte (if I feel thin)
Or
B: A venti Americano with room

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

2 Comments:
1-for the author, if you are having a hard time trying to figure out how to pay for your children's college, begin with taking the $5/day you are spending on coffee and put it in an interest bearing account.
2-for Startbucks, if you are truly trying to encourage consumers to use your refillable travel mugs-make them more affordable. $15 for a mug that yields a 10 cent discount is not encouragement.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

Altogether funny, damning and thought-provoking!

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

Hey Don,
If you're trying to figure out how to pay for college for your kids, how about not going to Starbucks. You'll save $30-$50 bucks a week for your kids' college, and you won't have to worry your I'm-concerned-about-the environment-but-I'm-not-going-to-do-anything-about-it-myself-except-complain-about-Starbucks self any more. Honestly, it's people like you that drive me nuts. Shut the 'f' up or start making a real effort. "I'll die without Starbucks" — No you won't. You'll find an alternative.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

The one thing that might work is an economic incentive. If Starbucks is spending twice what it needs to on paper cups by double-cupping, it can afford to offer cash incentives to reduce the waste, and at the same time, incease its "green-ness."
First, Starbucks could do a 1-2 month promotion: $1 off each drink that's served in the customer's own container (and think how many extra Starbucks mugs they'd sell in the first month). Then, going forward, increase the BYOC discount to 50 cents per drink, because 25 cents is obviously too low to matter to most Starbucks customers.
Combine the customer incentive with a fine for baristas caught automatically double-cupping when the customer doesn't ask.
I believe Starbucks consumers are mostly in favor of taking action to help the environment, but most of us don't realize how our little daily habits are a BIG obstacle to making real change.
But, most people pay attention to cash.
So...Starbucks could do some environmental good by helping people to change their habits and also do some economic good for themselves by cutting their cost for paper cups.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

If you'd like to figure out how to pay for college (for two), you might stop blowing ~$150 a month at starbucks. Stop wasting time trying to look/feel cool (or being your kids "friend") and be the adult that is responsible for bringing up children. If you must have a coffee fix, try the $0.99 cup at Mcdonalds!

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

It is too bad you don't have Tim Hortons in your state. They only use one cup and its cardboard. It is the best coffee around. Not as strong as Starbucks but tastes much better.

http://www.timhortons.com/

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

You could afford to send your kids to college by making your own coffee. Starbucks needs double cups because they burn--high degree--the coffee.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

Beautiful!Beautiful! Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

As a barista of Starbucks I understand your situation. Let me just say that it is NOT Starbucks' policy to double cup on ANY drink. I don't care what barista you talk to. We were instructed to always give one cup and a sleeve to every drink. It was a practice for a while to use two cups and a sleeve for hot teas b/c the water is 200+ degrees. Some baristas took it upon themselves to use this "rule" for other drinks that were mainly hot water i.e. Americanos. It then morphed into a free for all, everyone gets two cups and a sleeve kind of thing. It has recently been reinforced by the Corporate big wigs to only use 1 cup and sleeve for all. Which was the rule to begin with however like I said had changed into a wasteful, you're getting 2 cups so deal with it kind of thing. So to put a very long comment short (too late). For the most part you are supposed to get one cup and sleeve, however there are some people who refuse to conform. These are the same jerks that pretend you dont know what you mean when someone orders a small or a medium. Why? Because of the guests. Almost every day guests ask for a second cup whether it be on an americano, a lattes, or even a frappucino (yeah I don't get it either). Guests also often ask for the largest bag for their single muffin. Starbucks has a just say yes policy and if the rules tell the baristas to use one cup but them customer says two ( even three sometimes) guess how many cups they'll get. And as for the cups made from 10% recycled material, they get thrown away with the regular trash in every store I've ever worked at. Some stores have tried to start a recycling program but it a volunteer, single-store effort and the baristas had to be the ones to travel to and from the recycling plant two cities away, on their off time without reimbursment. Needless to say the recyling effort did not last long. So please don't blame baristas because they truely want to help. This issue and many others can only be fixed if the corporate leaders decide it is a lucrative enough investment.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

This is all about not seeing the forest for the trees, or the other way around. One previous comment made the real point: trees are a renewable resource. The trees used for paper are not old growth; they are all planted and grown for the purpose of making paper. A growing tree (especially a young one vigorously growing, as opposed to old growth) "freezes" carbon, keeping it out of the atmosphere. (Of course, the real real point is that CO2 has absolutely nothing to do with the miniscule global warming that may or may not be occuring and may or may not be good or bad. Natural water vapor has far more effect and, besides that, our warming/ cooling cycles are caused by sun fluctuations.)

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

Want to reduce your carbon footprint? Instead of asking for some ice cubes, most customers ask for a double cup.
And then I get the lovely customers who ask for a double cup coffee with a sleeve, and then when I put the drink down, they throw the sleeve down. (!!)
I also have quite a problem with Starbucks and recycling. Granted, I work at a licensed store, but I think it still applies. All of the recyclable milk cartons we use, and carboard we throw out is just that- thrown out. We have no receptacles for recyclable products. How can Starbucks say they're going green when they throw everything away?
And I'm sorry, but if your life is so pathetic that you make ten (TEN) trips to Starbucks in one week- maybe you should rethink your priorities? Dunkin donuts, badass coffee, folgers- there are choices out there!
I guess I sympathize with you though. It happens to be strange that the Starbucks you visit keep double cupping. Note that most Starbucks do not any in many you are encourage to make use of your "personal cup" wheter is a mug you bring in or use the ones found behind the counter. I would recomend to many of you to do futher research of the company and their practices. Their website is filled with information. I would also encourage any one to read, Pour Your Hart in to it. How Starbucks built a company one cup at a time by Howard Schultz and The Starbucks Experience, 5 Principles for Turning the Ordinary into Extraordinary by independent market analyst, Joseph A. Michelli.
These two books explained many of the practices, triumphs and errors of the company and the changes made to correct them.
Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

Its amazing how many people are focusing on the "college part" of this story... Let me explain...

In my opinion, one of the largest benefits to having a double cup is the increase in rigidity of the cup. Yes, the sleeve insulates and protects my hands from the hot drink, but if I'm walking around with my coffee, I've accidentally squeezed the cup too hard (for example, when someone bumps into me), and spilled some on myself. I've noticed, when a barista does give me a double cup, it's much easier to avoid any spills due to squeezing and general wobbling of the cup. Perhaps they could design a cup that is stiffer, it might alleviate some people's concerns (it would alleviate mine).

Just my two cents.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

Oh people, leave him alone.
I would rather see someone get their kicks from drinking coffee than to see them buying two packs of cigarettes a day.
He said if he was double cupped he would USE the darn second cup at home!!!
"quit drinking coffee and your kids can go to school..." Shut up, it's not that easy, a vice is a vice. I had a similar addiction to Starbucks too. I have now officially boycotted them. Not because they double cup, have dread-locked baristas that also call ME dude (I'm female), but because I think their quality control stinks. I can order 10 Venti Vanilla Lattes with soy, and only about 4 are drinkable/edible. They either taste like raspberry, orange, or some other foreign flavor besides vanilla. I've contacted corporate numerous times and get a free coffee coupon (which you get at the store if they don't make your drink right anyway...so what's the point!) I stopped complaining because I simply don't go there anymore. We're just a tiny place, but we do our best to conserve and recycle. When we bought our cafe one of the first to-do's was to get rid of the styrofoam. Then... We read a great article from Jamba Juice (yes, the big guy) about the studies they did on cups. And non-CFC styrofoam was the winner. Check it out on-line. To limit paper consumption, we also sell our brewed gourmet coffee for $1.00 if you bring in your own mug; and it doesn't have to be one of ours. As a consumer, think about what you are purchasing, how it's packaged, where is comes from, and who it comes from. It's up to all of us to be informed consumers, and to make the right choices.

And to get a better latte and save a few bucks for your kids' education, try a local coffee house. Odds are it will be cheaper, you'll get more personalized service, and probably a better cup of coffee.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

CAN SOME ONE SEND ME STARBUCK'S EMAIL ADDRESS FOR THEIR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT MANAGER?
I KNOW HOW TO MAKE A PAPER CUP THAT WILL KEEP PEOPLE FROM BURNING THEIR HANDS. Of course, it's not useful when you're flying around on business trips, but it is really nice to have your own espresso whenever you want it at home. It is a humorous, self-effacing attempt to convey a discrepancy that irks the author. Don’s comment about dying if he doesn't get his coffee isn't meant to be serious; it's meant to add light humor to a coffee addiction he's admitting. Take a look at the bigger picture that Don was trying to get across, which is the hypocrisy of a company who's mission is to be environmentally conscious but doesn't always abide by said mission, not how Don is going to pay for his kid's college education. I'm a coffee drinker too and this article's humorous manner got the point across and raised my awareness. I will now bring a travel mug as often as I can. Well done, Don. Do you know what baristas make? In Los Angeles, it's about $8 per hour, plus about $2 per hour in tips. One hardly is living the high life, working 20-30 hours a week for those wages. What company actually fines its employees for making mistakes?

In addition, I used to work for Starbucks, and the reason americanos are double cupped is because they are made with hot espresso and 200 degree water. The milk is steamed to 160 degrees, which is much more manageable with simply 1 cup and a sleeve. Hot tea has the same issue.

In addition, Starbucks has switched to a default of 2% milk, not non-fat milk, which is more in line with what other coffee shops provide and with what people drink at home. You can, however, request whole milk at no extra charge, or organic or soy milk for $0.40 more. I agree that the ten cent cup discount isn't incentive enough to encourage people to bring their own cups. In addition, since service is so fast at most Starbucks, it's not like a traditional neighborhood coffee shop where you linger over a paper and espresso in a china mug. It's more of a fast-food fast pace, which is why the reusable mug, while available at all starbucks, isn't popular: it's not as convenient. Most people take their coffee to go. (PS, Starbucks also sells French presses of coffee. If you have 1/2 an hour to kill, it is SO worth it to sit and split one with a friend.)

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

I have long thought of Starbucks as a great example of the power of marketing - but little else. It is amazing how we are able to convince a whole generation that if you don't drink Starbucks coffee, you are out-of-step. People used to be independent thinkers but we have turned into a bunch of sheep. What if someone said - this coffee tastes like crap! I think it does. It is too strong. I like Carmel Fraps once in awhile but I think they are way overpriced.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

At the risk of beating a dead horse, I have my 2 cents worth to add. I LOVE Starbucks. Absolutely love it. But I only allow myself one drink a week, usually on Friday morning as a celebratory way of TGIF. A really bad week will catch me stopping in in the middle of the week for a SPLURGE. I think the anger and hostility I am reading in some of the postings comes from the idea of someone being able to mindlessly waste that type of money on "coffee" when most of middle america is struggling to put gas in the car and keep their homes.
Additionally, I worked for one year in college at a Starbucks on campus in the food court. (about 4 yrs ago) We had the different sizes, and one cardboard sleeve that fit all the sizes. Saving the sleeve doesnt fit certain sizes is simply not true. The venti cup does get hotter, for some reason. (The is a good, scientific reason, but I missed that class).
I believe that Starbucks, like most companies in the good U. S. of A., talks a good "green" game, but it is just that. Talk. Automakers have had the ability to make an more economical, earth-friendly, electric car for well over 20 years. Only now that people aren't going to buy a new auto UNLESS it uses less gas are they getting real and moving forward. I lived in BG, KY during college and the town recycles. Whether you choose to or not, you will get a orange bin and be charged $4/mo for recycling. Very rarely did you ever see those bins out on recycling day. People paid for them, and stuck them behind the house, but didn't take the time to sort the recyclables. We are a lazy nation, with good intentions, but no real follow-thru. Until that changes, nothing is going to change.
Keep getting your starbucks, and when they start to hand you your double-cupped drink, just say "no thanks". And then sigh when the barista throws the extra cup in the trash!!!!!!

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

Just go to Caribou! All of you with your ME ME ME attitude, just gotta have that coffee, running pedestrians over with your huge SUV's that you still drive because you have all the money to pay $3.50 a gallon for gas, all while being too lazy to park that beast and WALK the 50 feet to the store entrance and STAND in line for 5 precious minutes. And we wonder why the world hates us while trying to be us and taking our jobs and our money. Men and women are DYING in Iraq and so we will have the priviledge of paying $4.00 a gallon by summer. These same cfc gasses put the dance in the dancing environmentalists since they in theory gave rise to a sky that falls. The manufactue of foam cups no longer "destroys the ozone layer" through its cfc's since they have not been used now for about 18-20 years. Still, environmentalists love a good "demon" and will rarely let one go once they have it by the tail... I love the reason that global "warming" is resulting in colder winter weather patterns because "that is what warming will do....cause more unstable weather patterns."
The demon hold on the cups currently puts forth that they are bad for the landfills since "they do not break down" I have to believe that a foam cup run throught a trash compactor/trash truck /dump is probably finished its coffee holding days. It is probably not going to do much to hold back the wate that wants to rot everything else in the dump either. My guess is that it is as inert as the pesky stone or pebble it will spend the rest of eternity residing next to. The real question here is how do we get rid of all of these dangerous stones and pebbles which are 1.refusing to break down and 2.filling our environment? Finally, oil is used in the manufacture of foam cups ....an ultimate form of recycling which takes trees and plants which died a bazillion years ago and puts them to use again today in stead of killing the live ones. My finger burn saving vote is for the cups(foam) made from the older recycled trees or for carved stone.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

Karen B. TERRIFIC article...while sadly very accurate; also hilarious..the way you tell it. What is funnier than truth when it comes to human behavior? For example, again, Im blown away by all the curmudgeon replies to your article. Ive never seen so many smart asses, know it alls, and judges, with the answer to everything, including your punishment for loving Starbucks-just because they don't-in my life ... til I started frequenting message boards and articles that allow replies (which I DO like the ability to comment). But I aggree with
BOOKLOVER HEY grouchos...Mr. Don did NOT ask for your advice on how to send his kids to college, nor did he even equate that problem to his Starbucks habit at all, not really. He obviously can afford Starbucks or he wouldn't continue to go. But he has a valid point about all the double cupping, wraps, double cups with a wrap, single cup no wrap - the corporate runarounds...recycling isn't that hard STARBUCKS POWERS THAT BE. The first comment about it making him feel young being called dude? That's called HUMOR...as in sense of humor and MAN do I see a lot of people here that either don't have a sense of humor or...THEY HAVENT HAD THEIR STARBUCKS YET THIS MORNING. I GET your sense of humor Don AND your truth in the inane practices and "I get back to you" cycle of "help" you have found at starbucks "corporate". If any of these jokers studied and knew how long it takes styrofoam to degrade in the earth they might better understand.

And the TRUTH in finding/getting an answer from Starbucks "corporate" evidently IS too difficult for the CEO's. And there is nothing worse than a flimsy 3000 degree coffee- cup (that's what I get at my coffee stop - they have great coffee AND donuts (which I can't get anymore since I changed to eating organic over a year ago) but the cup is some mystery material, is thin, and when you hold it its not only hot as H---, it squishes, and the lid almost pops off, talk about dangerous.

I think the answer is to keep a travel thermal mug or thermos strictly for the car, and use that. Ive never been in a Starbucks so don't any curmudgeons jump on me for this one but - couldnt they make a Starbucks thermal MUG, in NEON colors, size large (that would cover any size one orders or gee go all out and make a large and a small, shouldn't break 'em) with STARBUCKS emblazened across it in huge contrasting colors? THEY'd probably charge a fortune for it so I say they offer incentive programs, like - if you buy our thermal mug, you get $1 off, as SANDI suggested, every refill and I'll add every 6th refill is a freebie. With modern tech, they could have a little card you hang on your keychain that you run thru the little machine that takes the info off your card that it indeed is time for your freebie. And like cellphones, every 2 yrs you could "upgrade" and get a brand new thermal mug if you promise to stay a Starbuck's Thaaaat wouldn't Kill them! (would it?) Wonder if their profit margin is anything like the oil company that was on the carpet with congress the other day. (hundreds of BILLIONS in PROFIT...disgusting.) I suspect it is, from all I hear on the net about Starbucks expenditures by the new addict in town - starbucksaddiction and their gouging prices if they really are $5 a cup.

One last suggestion I think that should be implemented TOMORROW: if customers ask for double cupping, customers PAY for double cupping. (that will put a stop to it quicker than anything...if anything will.) "Yes sir/maam, you may have a 2nd cup for 50 cents." OR HEY they could make a Starbucks version of...-Ive seen them on one of the two major shopping channels - you can pick up a pan right out of the oven with it - its a GLOVE (with fingers,NOT a mitten)
..a Starbucks coffee GLOVE, sorry I forget what they call the material that allows you to do that, I don't think its asbestos (@@), You probably will barely be able to warm your hand with it because it works so well! buy one, keep it in the "glove compartment"(ok everybody pun groan all together now...well its better than being cranky) and there ya have it! One of two great answers! (well?) Or a rubber lab apron...for spills. *sigh* Or HEY maybe a Starbucks "drink hat" like they do for beer at games? Only coffee..padding, or just the hat, would keep it from burning your head, and you have the straw right there, hands free (somehow) coffee and driving.
Those cups, after filled, could be 'welded' shut.
Or make them like those kitchen storage containers that airlock shut. Gee, now I'll have to give in and go test this coffee that is causing all this talk, trouble, and landfill permanent residents.

OK, seriously..The thermal mug can be washed and reused over and over for years; and so can the glove (I WAS having fun with those ideas, but there IS a glove now that works for things straight out of the oven, so, may sound silly but better than all the hot, falling apart, billions of years degradable COFFEE FREAKING CUPS! You pick. Im all for saving trees - its ridiculous to say that trees are so easily replaceable..ever watch a tree grow? AND
having less disposable EVERYTHING would be great.
It was a cute idea in the 60s but now we are smart enough to think of ALL the collective masses of waste and just how ARE all those disposable coffee cups, wraps, lighters, ball point pens, diapers..ok that one Im all for...just lying somewhere, maybe squashed or broken into pieces but STILL not GONE...as we are growing and putting wildlife out of their homes, then whining because a mt lion attacks a jogger in the mt lion's home territory WE are encroaching upon, perhaps our punishment will be that the eventual GROWING, not degrading, disposable mounds are going to grow and grow until they take over OUR habitat.
Ya reap what ya sow.

DON - keep drinking your Starbucks if you love it that much. Good grief. We're all allowed to love something and not have to give it up. Life is short and once it passes you can't get it back - and Im sure you already have a plan for your kids education. I got the joke there (although the cost isn't a joke - there IS more financial aid out there than ever) and who knows, by the time your kids get to that age we may be back to not needing college educations after all, you know how cycles go..... ;O) (Im no mathemetician but even at today's costs, your coffee budget, if you deprived yourself and "died" - would NOT cover the two kid's college costs.
To all those who gave snarly remarks - go drink a cup of coffee and cheer up, and I don't care WHERE you get it - someone as cranky as several of you have been to Don, I'd say you need to stop at a truck stop and drink the diesel (my name for 'has-sat-overnight- old coffee)...heheh.

Thanks to the NICE responses. I enjoyed them all very much. SO refreshing. I get so tired of the snarlers on the net. Though I must admit its getting to where some of the snarlers are SO snipey they're getting funny, "Go back to Starbucks and pretend you're writing something important on your laptop." Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha. That's the voice of experience talking there, folks. Steve D, coffee cups ARE important, esp the styrofoam..they take millions of years to degrade in the ecosystem. And as you may know, multiply all the ppl going to Starbucks 20 times a week and wow what a lot of refuse just lying somewhere-filling up that landfill requiring a spot for a new one. Eventually one may be in your backyard. I never get the doublecup. Perhaps I look like someone who doesn't deserve one. Perhaps the writer of this article has that,"Give me a double cup or else" kind of look. Come to think of it, I often have to ask for the darn sleeve. They do not give that sleeve away readily at the Starbucks in LAX, in Star Idaho or even on Balboa Island (where people can be pretty high maintenace). So, I don't know what to tell you. Perhaps there are some demographic issues at play. Oh and by the way, if you don't use the sleeve or the doublecup that coffee can burn the HECK out of your hand. The only time I can relinquish the extra cup or sleeve is when I am skiing and conveniently have...ski gloves. That's an idea. Wear ski gloves to Starbucks or bring an oven mit. Firstly, it spends more on benefits for its partners (that's everyone who works for Starbucks) than on coffee beans. Secondly, Starbucks employs C.A.F.E. (Coffee And Farmer Equity) Practices in coffee-growing regions which basically means Starbucks provides the best possible prices while encouraging environmental sustainabilty. Thirdly, Starbucks recognizes that embracing diversity, among other things, is essential to our growth.
That being said, the double-cup issue can be a problem. I, myself, am not a particularly "green" person. On the other hand, working for Starbucks has encouraged and inspired me not to be so wasteful. The problem is that our hot water is a scalding 200 degrees Farenheit. In every store I've ever worked in, We've only double-cupped Americanos and brewed tea, as well as some short drinks. The risk of single-cupping an Americano is not only the heat reaching your hand but also the "flimsiness" factor. If you squeeze just a little too much on that single-cupped Americano, you could be in a world of hurt when that lid pops off.
I think the best solution is to bring in your own travel mug or cup. If you can't do this, however, I think your idea of saving that extra cup for next time is a perfectly good one. You could also extend that idea to 4-cup drink trays (they're extremely durable) and to our handled paper shopping bags. I've seen this done by some of our customers, but not many.
Thank you for not being afraid to share your experience regarding double-cupping, and maybe your kids can do what me and my wife did and put themselves through college! Are we still a corporate machine that should chill out a bit? Absolutely. Are we perfect? Heavens, no! But Starbucks is not nearly as evil as so many people think.

First of all, THE COFFEE IS NOT $5! The largest cup of coffee at my store is $2.09 including tax, with the smallest coming in at $1.61. Oh, what do you know - mere cents more than Dunkin' Donuts or the gas station!

The Americano, which is NOT supposed to be double-cupped, but often is - at the customer's request - is also not $5. I don't know the exact price of a Venti Americano, but it's under $3.

Where did this reputation of $5 coffee come from, then? The milk-based, syrup-filled espresso beverages topped with whipped cream! Now, I enjoy those as much as anybody else, but if you're having those sorts of drinks every day (a Venti drink with soy, syrup and extra shots can most definitely go up around and above $5), you're not only spending tons of money, you're consuming tons of calories, most of them sugar, which will negate the effects of the caffeine and make you feel like crap.

Lastly, we do not purposely burn our coffee like many say we do. The water in our brewing machines is very, very hot (I say this from experience - spilling it on your hands is NOT fun)... but that isn't even the problem. I brew our coffee at home, (which I recommend to anyone who loves Starbucks coffee, because it tastes better and saves lots of money) and it tastes beautiful. When we brew it in a French Press for tastings, using the SAME water from the SAME machine, it tastes beautiful. The problem is the coffee pots, which don't get rinsed and rotated enough, and the hold time being an hour, as opposed to 20-30 minutes.

Fortunately, Starbucks HAS realised this and is in the process of reworking our brewing standards. Expect to see this change in the next couple weeks...

...and for the record, you don't have to buy our mugs or use our mugs for the BYOC discount. I've filled customers' travel cups from 7-11 without blinking. Anyone who treats you differently is just being a jackass.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

First, I think your article was tongue-in-cheek, and I think these people are taking you way more serious than you intended.

Second - if one of a person's only concerns is the environmental impact they're making with their coffee purchase, then they should thank their lucky stars, because they obviously don't have more important things to worry about.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

Well, I was going to comment about the waste of money on Starbucks, but that has already been done. So I proceed to find an ugly, but half price mug and bring it up to the counter and order my drink only to be told that they NO LONGER CAN PUT THE DRINKS IN THOSE CUPS. I was quite confused and asked if it was because I chose the half price one, but no, they said it wasn't that. They offered to put my drink in a paper cup then I could pour it into my mug. I explained this was really not what I was trying to accomplish. Anyway, they said it's a sanitation thing.

I often order tea and get double cupped and paper sleeved. That tea is HOT. I mean, so hot I normally have to sit there at least half an hour before I touch it.

Also, I wanted to add, buying a coffee or tea daily for some people is a cheap way to rent some space for two hours. I don't need the coffee, I need somewhere to sit with my laptop away from the office and home so I can write. The coffee is just the price of my table. And for downtown "office space" with wireless access, it comes pretty cheap.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

I've never been double-cupped at a Starbucks anywhere and I'm a Duetto-Card-carrying customer, so your article was a bit surprising. Although I only go maybe a few times a month (maybe more often if on vacation) as we have three kids to feed and clothe -nevermind college.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

Yikes. This article made me think.

I go to Starbucks on extremely rare occasions. It's extremely expensive coffee, with a bitter-burnt taste to boot. I like Seattle's Best (at Borders) better, and my daughter and I do go there maybe twice a month and lounge over books and a latte. Mostly, we buy a bag of our favorite coffee and make it at home. (Starbucks' brand is hardly a choice.) Cool folks work there too.

The first suggestion that writers of these "how to save/make a million dollars/be a millionaire" books and articles mention is to get off your $3.50+ coffee addiction and put that money into savings.

I not only think about that with coffee but with other things too. If the amount of money I'm spending on a thing makes me feel that it's making someone else wealthy instead of me, I double and triple think before I spend that money. It's not made me wealthy (yet) but I must say I am out of debt now. Did my being careful about money help me get there? You'd better believe it. (Did my spending help me get in debt in the first place? You'd better believe it!)

Our twice-a-month bookstore cafe run is a treat (rather than a daily selfish-indulgence fest) and becomes an enjoyable event. I'm not judging the author or anyone else who has a Starbucks addiction (God knows we all have something if we'd just step back and look at ourselves). However, if one wants to afford that college, it can be done. I know I wouldn't be out of debt if I had always let my inner shopping addict reign free. It takes some work but it can be done. Don't let the horse control you - you control the horse!

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

I love coffee. I don't go to star bucks because unless you have lots of stuff in it the coffee tastes burnt. I want just coffee. Black and bitter. Tastes like shoe polish and looks like ink. The best place is an independent gas station with Arab oil. I use my own cup because, God knows where their cups have been. I never wash my cup, because a cup must be well seasoned like a cast iron skillet. With all the money I save, I play golf and buy golf clubs, lots of golf clubs.
When I see someone trying to conflate wasting paper (two cups and a paper sleeve VS. a Styrofoam cup)with saving the world, I just pee in the bushes and hit their SUV with a golf ball. "FORE"

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

When will I not be amazed at the disdain (sometimes hate) that comes from people who do not get the whole coffee thing? Folgers, McDonalds? If you compare those to Starbucks you are pretty well clueless to what coffee is about. And you know what? That is okay with me. I do not hate you for liking the coffee you like. I do not judge you as a person for liking the coffee you like. Please drink your cheaper choice of coffee, save your money for your other pleasures. My pleasure happens to be good coffee. I guess that somehow makes me a bad person. I thank Starbucks, however many mistakes they make, for being the coffee "missionaries" of this country. Before Starbucks, we all pretty much had to drink what I feel is crap coffee. As for this article, thanks. I enjoyed it. Lighten up people.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

Jen F. I work in management at a supermarket, and it absolutely drives me crazy when people want three small items in a double paper bag or every item in it's own double plastic bag. If Starbucks claims to be going green, but won't actually do anything but post a few links on their website, then what are they really doing? They're just jumping on the "green" bandwagon to attract consumers and make people feel like by choosing their coffee, a difference is being made in the world. It's actually pretty disgusting behavior if you ask me.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

I know I am Canadian so maybe I shouldn't be commenting on a US product but now that Starbuck's is attempting to invade Canada I feel ok about my following rant. Why do you allow yourselve's to be horribly overcharged for a hot beverage they try to pass off as coffee but which is in reality little more than mudpuddle water with a good helping of bile. Buy some good gourmet coffee and don't forget to load it up before you go to bed. If Starbucks is your choice, try Verona. There are really good ones all over the place, including the 'net.
2) I like Seattle's Best better than Starbucks, when I get coffee from a shop, but a couple of my local shops have both of those beat.
3) If a person has enough money to spend on indulgence without taking from their family responsibilities, then no one should open their mouth about it. I indulge my family as much or more than I do myself. I come last in my mind, but that's me, and I still find little indulgences. If my kids want to go to camp, they go. If I want Starbucks, I get it, and often they get hot chocolate. No one's butt is hanging out, so I don't tolerate criticism.
4) Everyone complains about college costs. I know people who make a quarter of a million a year and still complain about putting their kids through college. Did anyone hear of the kids working to help pay for it themselves? Gee, what a concept! I not only had to pay for ALL of it myself, because my family was poor, but I also gave money to my parents to bail them out of money binds, and lent my sister money for her college. Yes, she paid it all back with interest. AND I took out NO LOANS. So, it took awhile to finish, so what? Stop whining people.
5) Did you ever try taking the second cup off the bottom and leaving it on the counter? Yeah, they will probably pitch it, but it will give them the idea.
6) Don't get the idea that I am not environmentally conscious. I buy green as much as possible, recycle to the point of ridiculous, and as a family of 4, only have one half of the garbage can full each week. The environment is my business, and it has been good to me.

Starbucks contradictions irk caffeine addict

All this discussion is utterly useless. Attention starved, juvenile acting adults who can't get anyone to notice them have to create a reason to be "special". This is along the same line as asking for two cups.
