Major jefferson and Lt Ecklund are but 2 of many casualty of our wars on foreign... who have finally been laid to rest.
One of these days review the number of US and Allied POWs held by the Germans at Luftstalags KNOWN to have been 'liberated' by the Russian Army... and the relative number of US and Allied POWs who returned to the US after being 'liberated' by the Russian Army.
Similarly review the number of US and Allied POWs returned to us subsequent to the Korean War.
In both cases the number returned deviates widely from the number > KNOWN < to have been held.

What would happen to a US Citizen found with or "handing in" human remains kept in their possession? How long had this person been living in the USA with these remains before "handing them in"? If there is any logic here, it appears the logic is if you "find" human remains you can hold on to them for as long as you like. When you do "hand them in" there should be no recourse because if you or any of your relatives or countrymen find anymore we dont want you to be discouraged from waiting perhaps 32 years to "hand those over". These young men were US Citizens and US Soldiers and their remains were in possession of non US Citizens (living in the US) who do not even have to explain how or why they had them all this time? I sincerely feel for these families and can not begin to understand what they must be feeling. I do have a son however, and if someone ever kept any part of my sons remains for any period of time before "handing them in" WHOA -I would want a whole lot more than "it's not punishment we are after".

I have been going back to vietnam 2 to 3 times a year for the last 12 years, always keeping my ear to the ground for any info on MIA's POW's. In the course of my travels I have made wonderful friendships with an assortment of Vietnamese, including some of my former adversaries. One of the first bits of information i received was from a draftee in the Vietnam Army. I was told that anyone finding any remains or clues that lead to defined remains of American POW's. that person and his family will be eligible for immediate immigration to the USA as well as monetary awards upon the DNA proving the remains being of a MIA person. The guys that had these remains if indeed they had them in the usa were strange people, and I really wonder if they were indeed, former members of the South Vietnamese Armed Forces.

Mr. J Hughes and others..I agree but also rememebr that there wre over 15,000 Canadians served in USA uniforms in veitnam and another 40,000 served in other parts of the world in American uniforms. About 116 died in veitnam and are Honoured at the Wall in Washington. I was one of them. So when u talk about the ones going to Canada, please rmemeber many more from Canada came south!

Vietnam veteran,USMC combat infantry. At least we know that what happened to them. In a way it was a good thing that they had some bones. I remember some Marines putting VC bones in their packs to bring back to the USA.
Some of the Marines had complete skulls in their packs. Some veterans brought back and/or shipped stuff home. Of course back them there wasn't even any search of seabags when veterans came home.
If you are a veteran, or you know a veteran that brought back a skull of an VC, will you send it back to Vietnam? How do think that the familes of some NVA or VC feel not knowing where their loved one was killed. Hell, sometimes we would throw all the bodies in a bomb crater and cover them with dirt.
We as Americans have to realize and understand that the enemy is also human!

Cannon's remains were located in Vietnam and returned home. He died in a prison camp in Sept. 1968.

As the Aero Medical Evac Association prepares for its reunion in Colorado Springs in June we take a moment to honor the empty table and place setting for those comrades who have passed on or who did not make it back from the wars. It is hard watching these elderly men and women remember the flights and the patients they tended on their return from the hell of war. Their eyes still mist and there is a haunted look that never quite goes away as they bear their memories or quietly sit with their comrades. I grew up through the Viet Nam war and have several friends from when I was in college who served. I find this situation completly out of line. We have heard claims that remains were buried in Vietnamise graves for their protcetion, that remains and POW's have been held so that the Viet gov. could make sure that the reperations were paid.I do not care for any of these reasons. I am even more digusted by the suggestion from Bill Braniff that we pay for remains and offer asslyum. For peace of mind I will accept that those two came by the remains by exhuming the crash site. If our gov. would use it's head we could offer something along the lines of "if you know where remains are contact the US gov". and we will issue the same offer. Not to tote the remains around for years and offer them up when they need money or do not want to go home.Always live up to your word but it's time to make a change. Taking remains as trophies on either side is deplorible. As to the remians of enemy dead after battle it is what it is. In all realality "unknown" is probibly the more common name on a soilder's headstone.I am glad that the families can now know where their sons are and that they have been given their full honors here at home. As the years pass and it becomes clear that our MIA's from that war are gone Let us honor them as they and the living Vet's deserve.Their service to us was as great as any other in the past or present.

it took this long for DNA to come through with a poss ID
its not like we are back in the 40s.
